L'Onde / The wave

[aterial: Sock yarn, or any other available yarn (results prob. in size difference 100g of sock yarn should be suffcient for a small shawl (that's when you knit the Lace rows as \*yo, k2tog\*), the shawl size will be small though. If you knit \*yo, k1\* in both eyelet rows you need approx. 400g (the scarf will be sort of round / oval and very big), with a \*yo, k1\* in one row you'll need approx. 200g (the result will be a triangle, see example above). As an alternative for the last example you can knit both eyelet rows \*yo, k2tog, yo, k1\* Needles: Cables are the easiest tool, use the size indicated on your yarn Stitch marker: 6
Please read the pattern, before you start knitting :-)
At each beginning of a row: k1, yo / end of a row: yo, kl In the center always knit the last stitch on the right side of your shawl, then yo, knit center stitch, yo, and knit first stitch of the left side
Eyelet rows
Before each new pattern there's a Eyelet row You have 4 options: 1) \*yo, k1\*, the shawl will get wider, the triangle more like a Banana / Boomerang and more oval / round 2/3) \*yo, k2tog\* (doing it in both rows = small shawl / only used in the second row, see example dark purple shawl) 4) \*yo, k2to, yo, k1\* (results in a triangle shawl) Don't forget your YO at the beginning center and end! I'll not mention those in the patterns later on. [s1,k2,psso] = slip one stitch as if to knit, knit 2 together, pass the slipped stitch over these two (don't pull tight!) k2tog = knit 2 together p = purl k = knit BP = Beginning of pattern EP = End of pattern SM = Stitch marker R = row ES = edge stitch MS = middle stitch ssk = slip 1 stitch as if to knit, slip next stitch as if to knit, slip back on left hand needle, knit both together st = stitch yo = yarn over [s1,k1,psso] = slip one stitch as if to knit, knit one, pass slipped stitch over Cast on 11 stitches (on each side 1st = ES and 1 = MS) (CO 13 st if you want the edge a bit broader, use 2st as ES and knit them in all rows)

K 1 R, don't forget the YO, place the stitch markers while knitting To separate the edge and middle st. 3 rows stockinette stitch (Don't forget the YOs!)
Eyelet row
K1 \*yo, k2tog\* yo, k1, yo, (MS=k1), yo, k1, \*yo, k2tog\* , yo, k1 (or one of the other above mentioned eyelet row options - On my first scarf I did the \*yo, k2tog\*) Purll row 3 rows stockinette stitch Old Shale (pattern from the book 'Knitted Lace' by Jane Eaton) Necessary stitches: 18

You fill the pattern into the existing stitches. Count your stitches on each shawl side, minus the edge stitches and the middle stitch. I you have for example 120st on your “right side of the needle (starting side), divide these through 18 = 6.6 Means you can fill in the pattern times and you have 3 edge stitches extra (separate these from the rest of the pattern or you'll get mixed up when you do your normal YO's at the beginning and end of the rows!). Example: k1, yo, k3, \*pattern\*, k3, yo, k1 (MS) and the same procedure for the left side of your shawl Pattern: 1R stockinette stitch 1R purl \*k2tog (x3), yo, k1 (x6), k2tog (x3) Attention! Back row is stockinette stitch this time!: 1R stockinette stitch (Edge -Middle stitch(es) and yos are purled!) You can repeat the pattern as many times as it pleases you (I did a repeat of 6 - remember, if you do more, you need more yarn!)
Eyelet row
Check the Info at the first eyelet row. (At my first shawl I've done a \*yo, k1\* here) Lace pattern (from the book ^1500 patterns' by Mon Tricot)

Stitches needed: 10 Count your stitches again (minus MS and ES). Divide stitches through 10 (per needle), Leftover stitches will be again divided from the rest as edge stitches by stitch. Tip: It's good to keep an eye on the ^slipped' stitches in the middle of each pattern repeat. They are on top of each other. If you made a mistake somewhere, this is the easiest way to find where it was. 1) \*yo, k3, [s1,k2,psso], k3, yo, k1\* 2) purl all even rows 3) \*k1, yo, k2, [s1,k2,psso], k2, yo, k2\* 5) \*k2, yo, k1, [s1,k2,psso], k1, yo, k3\* 7) \*k3, yo, [s1,k2,psso], yo, k4\* 8) Don't forget to purl back the last row Start repeat in row one and do as many as you want (min. x2 - if you do more, you need more yardage) 4 rows stockinette stitch (Don't forget the YOs!)
Leaf stripe (Border pattern)
(from the book Ă©Schone Handarbeiten') After finishing the last row, cast on 16st (now we knit along the edge of the shawl . This is an alternative to the usual Cast off). K1, \*yo, k2tog\* incl. after 1 stitch after the edge, turn, purl 1R (now you have 17st) You have two options: start knitting, or count stitches, divide through the number of pattern rows (8) and if the number is uneven, add a stockinette row at the beginning and / or end. Example: Stitch count on the right side of shawl (minus the first two [this only on the left side of shawl] and the last two stitches) divide through 8. At 46st for example this would be 5 repeats, plus 3R stockinette at the beginning and end.

I suggest, knit ahead. In the end you will not really see the difference anyway ;-)
