Crocheting Henry the Hexapus: A Unique Amigurumi Pattern with Adaptability for Various Cephalopod Creations

Henry the Hexapus

An amigurumi anomaly

Pattern illustration

While visiting a friend in NYC earlier this year, she showed me a cute amigurumi octopus named Chutney. I tried, unsuccessfully to steal him from her by hiding him in my luggage. When I returned to Singapore, I decided to make my own cute octopus using some scrap yarn that my friend had given me. My octopus had similar construction to hers except I added my signature "backdoor bumhole" to his underside. AND... As I was using scrap yarn, as luck would have it—l ran out of yarn while making the legs and now my octopus is a HEXAPUS. I googled the word hexapus and found that there really is one in Blackpool, England. Here is a link to the telegraph article about the original Henry. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1580533/A-hexapus-not-a-sixlegged-octopus.html

Finished Dimensions:

-I like my Hexapus to easily fit in the palm of my hand and standing about 4 inches tall (10cm). -The legs are about 3 inches long (7cm) -The bumhole can easily accommodate 1 finger and is about 1 inch deep (2.5cm) -This pattern is easily adapted to other gauges and sizing, simply by do a few more rows of increases.

Notes:

-When crocheting stuffed animals, it is always best to use a tighter gauge than for blankets or clothing. The fabric should be stiff and able to hold its shape. This will stop the stuffing material from showing through the spaces betweenstitches. -This pattern is worked in spirals for the body. The legs are worked in rows.
