BRIM
Option 1: Garter brim with earflaps Begin with i-cord tie strings:
With Color A, CO 3 sts with smaller (US 6/4 mm) dpn:s. Do not turn! Slide the sts from the left end of the needle to the right end of the needle. Bring yard around from back and knit to end. Continue in this manner until the i-cord is about 6"/15 cm long or as long as you prefer. Do not cut yarn.
Earflap 1:
Start working earflap as flat. Row 1 (RS): K1, m1R, k1, m1L, k1. (5 sts) Turn work. Row 2 (WS): Knit. Row 3 (RS): K1, m1R, k to 1 st bef end, m1L, k1. (7 sts) Row 4 (WS): Knit. Repeat rows 3&4 until you have 13(15, 15, 15, 17, 17) sts. Work even in garter st 8 more rows and then one RS row more. Cut yarn.
Earflap 2:
Work the other i-cord tie string and earflap similarly but do not cut yarn.
Brim:
Remove the sts from the earflap 2 on (smaller US 6/4mm) circular needle. Starting from where the working yarn is, CO 6(8, 10, 14, 16, 18) sts (e.g. cable CO/knitted CO). Place the earflap 1 next to where the working yarn is. Check that the earflap 1 is RS facing you (yarn tail from the earflap on your left) and purl the sts of earflap 1 joining it to work. CO 13(16, 20, 25, 28, 29) sts and continue purling the sts of earflap 2. Pm right after earflap 2, in front of the sts that you first CO. Marker indicates beginning of rnd.
Next rnd: Knit.
Continue in garter st until the brim measures approx. 2"/5 cm. End with purl round.
Option 2: Rib brim (no earflaps)
With Color A, CO 45(54, 60, 69, 78, 81) sts with smaller (Us6/4 mm) needles. Join in the round, pm to indicate the beginning of rnd. Rnd 1: \*p2, k1\*, rep \*-\* to end. Continue k1, p2 ribbing for approx. 2"(5 cm).
BODY

Color A rnd 5: \*k2, mLoopSt (to the previous A rnd) and pull the yarn through the st loosely and place the loop to the left hand needle, ssk (loop and next st are knit tog through the back loop)\*, rep \*-\* to end.
Color A rnd 6: Purl.
Repeat 6 rnds of the pattern until hat measures approx. 6(7, 7.5, 9, 9.5, 10.25)"/15(17, 19, 22, 24, 26) cm from the CO edge and end with rnd 4 of the pattern.
