Description:

I made this flower as an entry for the Passionate About Crochet theme “India Independence Day." The bright colour of saffron gives a very nice touch to the pure white I am using and the green softens the shades, giving a pleasant looking piece of crochet art. One complete stem takes about 60 - 90 minutes to make. There are two options to finish the flower; ruffle and thin edging and both patterns are included.

Stitches Used

SI st = slip stitch Sc = single crochet Hdc = half double crochet Dc = double crochet Standing sc = standing single crochet Yo = yarn over Reverse Sc: Reverse single crochet

Note:

The flower is made of two layers of petals and the upper stems; the front, which was worked as a tube in circular mode finished with a round of variegated yarn. The base petals are worked in round in one go without cutting the thread from start to finish. See step-by-step pictures for reference at the bottom of the page. Cut the wires as follows: Leaf: 22-gauge: 22 inches: 2 for each flower Stem: 18-gauge: 22 inches: same number of flowers Use safety glasses when cutting the wires. Standing sc: Start with a slipknot, insert hook into the mentioned st, yo, pull through two loops on hook. See tutorial on how to make a standing sc on Dedri's blog. Standing dc: Start with a slipknot, yo, insert hook into the mentioned st, yo, pull through two loops on hook, yo, pull through two loops on hook. Reverse sc: Working on the right side of the fabric, insert hook into the next stitch to the right, yarn over (two twisted loops on hook), pull through 2 loops.

Assembly

Sew all ends except those at the center of the petals and the upper stems before putting together all the pieces. Tighten all the stitches at the center of the petals and the upper stems.

Preparing the leaves and flowers.

Cut 15 inches of thread, fold in half and attach it to the center bottom part of the leaf. Pull the thread gently toward the wire. Using flower tape, wrap around the wire and the threads till the end of the wires. Repeat for the rest of the leaves. Cut 6 of 22-inches of wire, fold it in half. Pick up 5 pieces of q-tips, hook it into the wire, insert the wire into the center of the upper layer of the flower, through the lower layer, then through the upper stem. Pull the wire and all the ends gently all the way down. Hold the wire firmly in place, pick up the wrapping tape and wrap diagonally a few times all the way down leaving a few inches till end of the wire. Attach 2 leaves; continue wrapping till all parts of the wire are wrapped. Arrange the flower in a vase.
