Directions:
This stitch pattern, called Indian Cross Stitch, reminded me of a river current with waves. I took the stitch pattern from newstitchaday.com and made a scarf for a friend going through the slow passing of her mother, praying that she would be flooded with “peace like a river" as she grieves through this painful process. Check out http://newstitchaday.com/?s=indian+cross+stitch to watch a video for how to make this easy, yet unique stitch. The scarf is quick and easy, brainless knitting -- something you can do while chatting or listening to a good audiobook, and yet it makes a lovely completed project. Enjoy! Cast on 32 stitches, or any multiple of 8. Rows 1-5: K to end of row. Row 6: K1, \*insert the needle into the next stitch kwise, as if to knit. Now wrap the needle with the working yarn three times, then finish knitting the stitch, incorporating the wraps as well. Repeat from \* to the last stitch, K1. Row 7: \*Sl pwise the first 8 stitches to the right needle, allowing the wraps to come undone. You'll now have 8 very large stitches. Now take the left needle, insert it kwise into the first 4 stitches (the right-most stitches) and pull them up and over the last 4 and onto the left needle. Move the last 4 onto the left needle as well. The 8 stitches are now crossed. K these stitches in their new order. Repeat from \* to end of row. Rows 8-12: K to end of row. Row 13: Same as row 6. Row 14: Same as row 7, but this time sl only the first 4 stitches to the right needle, allowing them to come unwrapped. Cross the first 2 over the last 2 so that they end up crossed on your left needle, and knit these 4 stitches in their new order. (This allows the pattern to alternate on your scarf.) Then go back to the 8 stitch cross pattern as in row 7: \*Sl pwise the first 8 stitches to the right needle, allowing the wraps to come undone; cross the first 4 over the last 4 and knit them in their new order. Repeat from \* to last 4 stitches, then finish as the beginning of this row, slipping only the final 4 stitches, crossing the first 2 over the second 2 and knit them in their new order. Repeat this pattern to desired length, bind off. Add tassels if desired.
