toe:

Cast on 24 sts using Judy's Magic Cast On (see knitty.com, spring'06) or any other invisible CO you like. If using dpns divide sts as follows: needle 1: 12 sts. These will form the instep needles $_{2+3}$ : 6 sts each. These will form the sole.

Toe Increase:

Round 1: instep: kfb, [ktbl, p] 4times, ktbl, kfb, k sole: kfb, k until 2 sts remain on needle3, kfb, k $=>4$ sts increased Round 2: instep: kfb, [p, ktbll 5times, p, kfb, k sole: kfb, k until 2 sts remain on needle3, kfb, k $=>32$ sts Round 3: instep: kfb, [ktbl, p] 6times, ktbl, kfb, k sole: kfb, k until 2 sts remain on needle3, kfb, k $=>36$ sts Round 4: instep: k, [p, ktbll 7times, p, k2 sole: k all sts $=>$ even round Round 5: instep: kfb, [p, ktbl] 7times, p, kfb, k sole: kfb, k until 2 sts remain on needle3, kfb, k $=>40$ sts Round 6: instep: kfb, [ktbl, p] 8times, ktbl, kfb, k sole: kfb, k until 2 sts remain on needle3, kfb, k $=>44$ sts Round 7: instep: k, [p, ktbl] 9times, p, k2 sole: k all sts $=>$ even round Round 8-17: alternate increasing and even rounds while always keeping the ribbing in pattern on the instep and knitting stockinette on the sole. (In the increasing rows always kfb the first and penultimate stitch of the instep and the sole, thus increasing by 4 sts / increasing round) Round 18: instep: p, [ktbl, p]15 times, kfb. sole: k all sts $=>65$ sts (33 on instep needle, 16 on each sole needle)

transition toe to foot:

for a smooth transition of the toe ribbing into the main pattern on the instep, knit rows 1-8 of the toe transition chart once. on the sole always keep the sts in stockinette.

toe transition chart:

foot:

instep:work rows 1-32 of main-pattern. sole: knit all stitches continue in pattern until work measures approx. 2 inches less then desired length of foot. work to end of instep stitches, ending if ever possible with row 5 or 21 of main-pattern (this makes for an nice pattern start later on at the back side of the leg.)

heel:

put the 33 instep sts on hold, k2togtbl the first 2 stitches of the sole and work a short row heel over the 31 sole stitches. feel free to use any of your favorite techniques to do a short row heel (yarnover, wrapped stitch, Japanese, ..). finish your heel with a RS row and continue knitting in the round for the leg. leg:

front of the leg ("instep stitches"): continue in main pattern as established back of the leg (\*heel stitches"): knit in main pattern also (same row as on the front), but always omit stitches no. 1 and 33 (i.e. don't knit the first and the last purl st) repeat the main pattern until leg measures approx. $2.5^{\circ}$ less than desired length. work to end of “heel stitches", ending with row 5 or 21 of main-pattern.

leg transition into cuff:

this chart provides for a smooth transition of the leg pattern into the cuffribbing. (note: the sample sock shown in the pictures was knit without this transition) only if your leg ended with row 21: knit sts 1 to 16 of the cuff transition chart four times per round only if your leg ended with row 5: knit sts 9 to 24 of the cuff transition chart four times per round in both cases: knit rows 1-15 of the cuff transition chart once.

Pattern illustration

cuff:

knit in ribbing pattern as established in last row of cuff transition chart (p, ktbl) for 15 rows or until you nearly run out of yarn.

Cast off:

cast off using this stretchy lace-cast-off method: work 2 sts, maintaining rib pattern. \*bring yarn to back of work, slip the 2 sts back onto left needle and k2tbl. knit next stitch in rib pattern. repeat from \* until all stitches have been cast off. don't knit too loosely lest the edge be too wide. weave in all ends and then don't forget to knit a second sock.

about this pattern:

"Le Sacre du Printemps" (the Rite of Spring), ballet by Igor Stravinsky, depicts the power and savage beauty of the arriving spring as a wild dancing celebration. the pattern of this sock pictures the cracking earth with the first sprouts emerging and at the same time you can imagine an intertwining whirlwind of dance. a slightly modified cable pattern, found in a modern Japanese pattern book (\*knitting patterns book 250'by $\bigcirc$ Shida Hitomi, Nihon Vogue), now makes for a nice sock where the stitches transition from toe to foot, leg $\bigcirc$ and up into the cuff.
