Land Under Wave Double-Knitted Scarf
Yarn: $300\mathrm{g}$ Evilla $_{8/2}$ Effektgarn, color A-81. This yarn is used for both sides of the scarf, but the color progression is started at two different places to provide the motif with contrast. Chart is written with the front color as white and the reverse color as black. Keep a safety pin on the right side of your work to keep track while working the motif. The finished prototype took only 212 grams of yarn, but it is always wise to have some extra for color matching when you come to theendof aball. The pattern assumes a familiarity with the double-knitting style, which results in a reversible fabric. If you would like to learn more, StitchDiva.com has some excellent video tutorials.

Approximate size: $8^{\prime\prime}$ wideby $80^{\prime\prime}$ long. Gauge: about 4.5 stitches/6.5 rows to the inch. Needle:US 4, $16^{\prime\prime}$ circular or size 4 straights. Other items needed: row counter, stitch markers (2), seaming needle. With both yarns held together, cast on 36 stitches. Turn. Row 1: Begin working double knitting. Treat each loop on the needle as a separate stitch. Thus, although you cast on 36, you will end up working 72 stitches. Make sure to alternate your yarns. Rows 2-18: Work in double knitting. Put a stitch marker after the third stitch pair and before the last three stitch pairs. (These stitch groups will not be part of the chart.)

Row 19: Begin chart. After chart is complete (row 60 of project), return to plain double knitting as previously for as long as you like. The prototype was knit with 400 rows between motifs, meaning this section ends at row 460. Row 461: Begin working chart again, but start at row 42 and work your way down. This way your Land Under Wave pattern will be right side up no matter which end of the scarf hangs down in front. After row 1 (end) of chart is complete, return to plain double knitting as previously. Work 18 rows. Bind off all stitches: k2tog each stitch pair and treat as one; use both strands of yarn. To finish the long edges of the scarf, use your seaming needle to work mattress stitch. Finishing Evilla (this method also works with Kauni or Aade Long yarns) 1. Put scarf into a mesh laundry bag that's large enough for it to move around inside. 2. Set your washing machine to cold water wash/cold water rinse. 3. If you have a choice of cycle types, choose Delicate cycle, or as close to it as you can get. 4. If you have an "extra soak" feature, choose that. 5. If you have a selection to choose the level of soil on the garment, choose "light." 6. For your laundry detergent, use your preferred (Eucalan, Soak). I use "The Laundress" Wool & Cashmere Shampoo which is available at Amazon. 7. Also add liquid fabric softener sufficient for the size of the wash load. Allow the scarf, in its mesh baggie, to go through the full cycle. When done, remove. It will not be wet enough to need squeezing out. Lay flat on a couple of towels to block it, and align your side seams properly. It should take about 12 hours to dry. The slight agitation of a machine wash will help any irregular stitches fall into place nicely.

Reverse Side "What was your name, now?" "Tiffany, er, kelda." "A good name. In our tongue you'd be Tir-far-thoinn, Land Under Wave,” said the kelda. It sounded like "Tiffan." [Tiffany] paused, put the paddles down, and with the tip of a very clean finger drew a curved line in the surface, with another curved line just touching it, so that together they looked like a wave. She traced a third, flat curve under it, whichwastheChalk. Land Under Wave. The Wee Free Men $\circledcirc$ 2003 Terry Pratchett
