Knit every stitch of every row (garter stitch) until piece measures 17" (20"). Do not bind off. Graft live stitches to cast-on edge. Take care not to twist brim while joining.

Finishing

Cut yarn, leaving a 1-yard length of yarn. Thread the tail yarn through the tapestry needle. Using the needle, bring the yarn through the remaining 6 (7) loops on the double pointed needles. Turn hat inside out. Bring the tail yarn to the inside of the hat. Weave the end of the yarn in by sewing through groups of 4 or 5 purl bumps diagonally. Change directions at least twice before trimming yarn flush to the inside of the hat. Sew in remaining ends on the inside of the hat using the same technique.

Crown

Using circular needle, on the inside of brim tube, pick up and knit 60 (70) stitches a half-inch (fifth garter st. “bump') in from edge. Mark beginning of round by placing a loop of a contrasting color of yarn (or stitch marker) on the needle between the first and last stitches. Knit one round. Decrease pattern - same for both sizes. Switch to double pointed needles by knitting on to them, when the circular needle is too long to continue. To adjust for size, knit the brim shorter or longer. Be sure that the number of stitches you pick up for the crown of the hat is divisible by ten. Then, use the same decrease pattern given. The number of stitches remaining may differ from the pattern as written - just finish off the top of the hat in the same manner. \*knit 8 stitches, knit 2 together. Repeat from \* to end of round. Fiber junkie, artist, poet, filmmaker . . . at the gentle nudging of those I've knit for in the last few years, I'm offering patterns for sale under the imprint Studio Drawclose : Jessica Fenlon Designs. I wrote how-to knitting articles for knitty in 2002-03, and published “The Cherry Variations" there. Co-designed a light summer top with Lily M. Chin, for her book, The Urban Knitter. Yes, I did spin and knit a sweater that included human hair, part of my MFA thesis at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where I also created & taught the class Knitting for Artists in 2001-02. Working knit stores in Boston and Pittsburgh, I wrote and customized patterns, and taught others how to make. Post knitting retail, I design almost everything I knit for myself and others. I love the problem solving aspects of design, and the whole process of knitting. Be well in all things - Jessica Fenlon Thanks for including me in your knitting life!
