FARTHING PATTERNS
BOOKMARKS - ENGLISH AND WELSH VERSIONS

Materials required: 0.60 mm hook, No 80 thread (%2 x 5g ball) Finished size: 8-inches/20 cm long by $1\%$ -inches/4 cm wide Gauge: Row 1: 16 trs $=$ 1-inch/2.5 cm Rows $1\!-\!2\!=\!\frac{1}{4}$ -inch/0.5 cm approx Instructions and charts (including alphabet) are also included for personalising the bookmark and for making a bookmark with a plain spine
Abbreviations:
ch - chain; dc - double crochet; tr - treble crochet; htr - half treble crochet; dtr - double treble; st - stitch; sl - slip; () - repeat instructions between brackets as detailed in text; ch space - chain space.
Special filet stitches:
Turning/starting mesh - 5 ch, miss next 2 ch, 1 tr in next tr Mesh - 2 ch, miss next 2 sts or ch, 1 tr in next tr Block - 2 tr in next ch sp, 1 tr in next tr, or if working over block of previous row, (1 tr into next tr) three times For increasing and decreasing instructions see bottom of this page US readers please note that UK terms are used throughout this pattern, therefore: dc $=$ single crochet, tr $=$ double crochet; htr $=$ half double crochet; dtr $=$ triple crochet; miss $=$ skip.

For either bookmark: Worked in rows, turn at the end of every row Foundation ch: 105 ch Row 1: 1 tr into $4^{\mathrm{th}}$ ch from hook, I tr into next tr to end. (103 tr) Row 2: to increase at start of a row - 5 ch $[1^{\mathrm{st}}\,3$ ch forms 1st tr], 1 tr into each of next 2 ch, 1 tr into each tr to end. (106 tr) Row 3: sl st into each of $1^{\mathrm{st}}\,3$ tr, 3 ch $[1^{\mathrm{st}}$ tr], 1 tr into each tr to end, (1 dtr into base of last st worked) three times to form increase at end of row (106 tr) Row4:5ch $[1^{\mathrm{st}}\,3$ ch forms $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ tr], 1 tr into each of next 2 ch, 1 tr into next tr, (2 ch, miss next 2 tr, 1 tr into next tr) thirty two times, (1 tr into next tr) three times, 2 ch, miss next 2 tr, 1 tr into next tr, (1 tr into next tr) three times Row5:3ch $[1^{\mathrm{st}}$ tr], (1 tr into next tr) three times, (2 ch miss next tr, 1 tr into next tr) twice, (2 tr into next ch sp, 1 tr into next tr) to end of row, (1 dtr into base of last st worked) three times to form increase at end of row. Row6:5ch $[1^{\mathrm{st}}\,3$ ch forms $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ tr], 1 tr into each of next 2 ch, (1 tr into next tr) one hundred times, 2 ch, miss 2 tr, 1 tr into next tr, (2 ch, 1 tr into next tr) twice, (1 tr into next tr) three times. Personalised Bookmarks

If you wish to make a personalised bookmark; use the templatebelowtoplace lettersof the alphabet along the spine of the book. These may be placed either vertically as shown in the examples of English and Welsh bookmarks or horizontally. Pleasenote Not all letters are the same width, so will need to be positioned carefully.

A thin ribbon may be threaded through mesh holes on row 4 to form a bookmark within the bookmark if desired.
