Handcrafted Elven Leaf Brooch Pattern: Inspired by JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings

ELVEN Lear Brooch

An original design inspired by the gifts from Galadriel and the Elves of Lothlorien to the Fellowship of the Ring in the “Lord of the Rings' by JRR Tolkien. Pattern designed and written by Marie Wright aka Wychwoodlady (Ravelry ID) Please note that this pattern requires the user to knit, crochet and embroider.

Materials:

Green 4 ply yarn (circa 22 wraps per inch), approx 10g Silver 4 ply yarn (circa 22 wraps per inch), approx 5g 2.5mm double pointed knitting needles 2.5mm crochet hook 1 darning needle Brooch pin and needle and thread to attach Gauge: This is not vital, however the brooch shown was knit at a tension of 10 stitches and 12 rows to 1" square, which achieved an appropriately dense finish.

Abbreviations:

CO-Cast on K - Knit M1 - Pick up and knit into the bar between the last stitch and the next stitch BO -Bind off SC - Single crochet TR-Treble

Instructions:

Cast on 3 stitches using the main colour and 2.5mm knitting needles.

Leaf tip & body shaping

Row 1: Purl to end Row 2: Knit to end Row 3: Purl to end Row 4: K1, M1, knit to last stitch, M1, K1 Repeat these 4 rows until there are 15 stitches in total.

Leaf base shaping

Row 1: Purl Row 2: CO 4 knitwise, knit across these new stitches and to the end of the row Row 3: CO 4 purlwise, purl across these new stitches and to the end of the row Row 4: CO 3 knitwise, knit across the new stitches and to the end of the row Row 5: CO 3, purl across the new stitches and to the end of the row Rou 6.K1 M1 lnit to lact ctitoh M1 K1 Row 7: Purl Row 8: BO 3 knitwise, knit to endRow 9: BO 3 purlwise, purl to end Row 10: BO 12, pass the last stitch to the left needle, insert right needle into stitch 13 rows below, and pull yarn through from back to form a loop. Slip 2 stitches knitwise, and knit these and the loop together through back of loops, BO remaining stitches. Weave in ends. Block to minimise leaf curl.

Edging

Using the silver yarn and a 2.5mm crochet hook, join yarn and work around the edge in SC, working SC, TR, SC into each of the 3 leaf-tips, and inserting the hook approx 1cm from the edge when working the SC at each indent to pinch the edge in further. Weave in ends.

Veins

With the darning needle and silver yarn embroider veins along each leaf section.

Stem

Using the 2.5mm needles and silver yarn pick up and knit 3 stitches at the centre of the base. Using these 3 stitches work approx 1 inch of i-cord. Draw the yarn through the stitches and tighten. Weave in ends.

Pin

With a needle and thread attach the brooch pin to the back of the leaf.
