How To Crochet A Scarf: Vine with Berries and Tiny Ladybird British/Australian Terms

Hi, welcome to the weird & wonderful world of Berthas Bizarre Bazaar. My designs are all original and this is more a tutorial than a pattern, which will enable you to make your own crocheted vine to wear as you wish, as a scarf, headwrap, belt or whatever you like. I'm all for self empowerment so get stuck in, and although I have no objection to you making these and selling them yourself, I do politely request that you credit me and direct people to this pattern via http://www.etsy.com/shop/BerthasBizarreBazaar. The scarf in the picture is around 2 metres long and used about 20 grams of yarn (l used Rico creative poems) but you can obviously make yours longer or shorter and use any yarn you like. I chose 'creative poems' as it is 1oo% pure new wool and changes colour gradually as you work but you might prefer to do the stem all in brown and the leaves all the same shade of green with purple or pink or blue berries, in which case you will just need to buy more yarn so you have all the colours you want

(or carefully separate out the colours of a variegated ball-l separated the light green for the berries before I began then just started at the brownest part for thestem). Anyway-what I'm saying is that you may be able to make 2 from one 50g ball of yarn if you choose wisely. Suggested Yarn 1 Ball 'Rico Creative Poems' or similar, Red, Black and white Embroidery Floss Suggested hooks 4mm and 1.5mm Sewing needle large enough for embroidery floss If you do choose creative poems I recommend about a 4 mm hook depending how loosely you work and how loose/tight you like your stitches. I always find it helpful to play around a bit with a new yarn and see how it comes out on different hooks. Plus they generally have a guide on the label as to what hook size to use so just follow that if you go for a different yarn. Gauge is not important.

Let's Get Started!

'Stem': Make a slip stitch then chain as long as you want your vine to be (if you would like it a little thicker/more stretchy you can use foundation double crochet instead of chain). Leaf: Continuing from the end of the starting chain, \*work 1 DC in the 2rd chain from the hook, 1 half treble in the next stitch, 1 treble in the next 2 stitches, 1 half treble in the next stitch, 1 DC in the next. Fasten off and weave in end\*. For all the other leaves, join the yarn to the 'stem' wherever you want a leaf, chain 6 and then work as for the first leaf (from \*-\*) If you are using any kind of colour changing yarn I would recommend adding the leaves randomly so that the colours are mixed up, or you can just start at one end and work your way along, which will result in the leaf colours graduating from one end to the other in order as the yarn naturally changes. Again, personal choice. I prefer random :) Berries: Join yarn at the base of a leaf in whichever colour you want your berries to be, chain 2, work 2 trebles together into same stitch (work one treble EXCEPT for the last yarn over and pull through [2 loops on hook],work second treble and on last yarn over and pull through pull it through all loops on hook)=cluster, Chain 2 and work 2 trebles together in same stitch (top of ist cluster) to form a second cluster Join in beginning stitch, fasten off leaving about a 6 inch/15cm tail, sew up the edge of the berry to round out the shape fasten off again and weaveinend. Repeat wherever you want berries. Ladybird: For the ladybird you will need red, black and white embroidery threads, a 1.5mm hook and a needle. In Red, make a slip stitch and chain 4, 1DC in 2nd stitch from hook, Half Treble in the next stitch, 3 DC in next, Half Treble in the next, 2DC in next and join with a slip stitch into Ist DC. 1 DC in each stitch around and join with a slip stitch. Fasten off and weave in end. In Black sew on 7 spots and make a head with a few stitches through one end, fasten off leaving a long tail. Sew two white 'eyes' onto the front of the head. Using the black thread tail sew the ladybird onto a leaf, a berry, or the stem of your vine, taking care not to sew all the way through so that the attaching stitches are invisible. Fasten off and weave inend.
