Jester Hat / Jack-n-the Box Hat

Released: July 2013 Materials: Hook size K(6.5mm) Worsted (4) weight yarn (4 colors-I used Red Heart) Yarn Needle 2 - 30mm Jingle Bells or Small pom maker (optional) Stitches Used: Dc=double crochet Hdc=half double crochet Sc=single crochet Ch=chain Slst=slip stitch St=Stitch
Size Gauge:
Please check gauge for appropriate size. Change hook to correct size to obtain gauge. With Hook K: 9 rows with 12 hdc = 4 inches square Hat Sizing (top of hat where it sits on head-does not include the tie): Newborn (12 % ” around - fits up to 14” circumference) 3 to 6 Months (14" around - fits up to 15" or 16" circumference) 6 to 12 Months (16" around - fits up to 18" circumference) 12 to 24 Months (17" around - fits up to 19" circumference) Child (18" around - fits up to 20" circumference)
Hat Notations:
■Always count the beginning ch of hdc rows. 1 When working rounds I state “hdc in same st"' this means to compete a hdc in the same st you just joined. When you do this and work a hdc in each st around including your join st you increase your st count by 1 in each row.
Jester Points for newborn & 3-6 month hat sizes: make 2
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 5 hdc 3" chain from hook, join in top beginning ch (6) Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st you just joined and in each st around, join (7) Rnd 3: Ch 2, hdc in same st you just joined and in each st around, join (8) Rnd 4: Ch 2, hdc in same st you just joined, hdc in next 3 st, 2hdc, hdc in next 3, join (10) Rnd 5: Ch 2, hdc in same st you just joined, hdc in next 4 st, 2hdc, hdc in next 4, join (12) Rnd 6: Ch 2, hdc in same st you just joined, hdc in next 5 st, 2hdc, hdc in next 5, join (14) Rnd 7: Ch 2, hdc in same st you just joined, hdc in next 6 st, 2hdc, hdc in next 6, join (16) Rnd 8: Ch 2, hdc in same st you just joined, hdc in next 7 st, 2hdc, hdc in next 7, join (18) Rnd 9: Ch 2, hdc in same st you just joined, hdc in next 8 st, 2hdc, hdc in next 8, join (20) Rnd 10-16: Ch 2, hdc in each st around, join (20) Rnd 17: Ch 2, hdc in same st you just joined, hdc in next 4 st, (2hdc, hdc in next 4 st) repeat 2 more times, join (24) if this is your first jester point, fasten off. If this is your second jester point do not fasten off. On second jester point, slst in next 7 st, lay right side together (seams going down center of outside), slst through both jester points from the inside in next 10 st. Rnd 18: (you may switch colors here to begin the main hat section) Ch 2, 2hdc in first st, hdc in next 13 st, 2hdc, 2hdc, hdc in next 13 st, 2hdc in last st, join (35 counting beginning ch) continue to correct hat size.
Joining Jester Points & Rnd 18 of Newborn & 3-6 month size
Newborn:
Rnd 19-24: Ch 2, hdc in each st around, join (35) Rnd 25: Switch to crown color of yarn, Ch 1, sc in each st around, join (35) Rnd 26: Turn, do not ch 1, skip 2 st, in next st work the following [(4dc, ch 2, slst in 2nd ch from hook, 4 dc) skip next 2 st, slst in next st, skip next 2 st] repeat to end (7 points), fasten off and tack down the points of the crown to the hat. Sew small poms or 1" bells to tips of jester points.
3-6 Month size:
Rnd 19: Ch 2, hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 12, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 12, 2hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 8 st, join (38) Rnd 20-25: hdc in each st around, join (38) Rnd 26: Switch to crown color of yarn, Ch 1, sc in each st around, join (38) Rnd 27: Turn, do not ch 1, skip 2 st, in next st work the following [(4dc, ch 2, slst in 2nd ch from hook, 4 dc) skip next 2 st, slst in next st, skip next 2 st, (4dc, ch 2, slst in 2nd ch from hook, 4dc) skip next 2 st, slst in next 2 st, skip next 2 st] repeat to end (7 points), fasten off and tack down the points of the crown to the hat. Sew small poms or 1'" bells to tips of jester points.

Sew small poms or 1' bells to tips of jester points.
12 - 24 Month size:
Rnd 22: Ch 2, hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3, (2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 4) repeat to end, join (45) Rnd 23-30: hdc in each st around, join (45) Rnd 31: Switch to crown color of yarn, Ch 1, sc in each st around, join (45) Rnd 32: Turn, do not ch 1, skip 2 st, in next st work the following [(4dc, ch 2, slst in 2ma ch from hook, 4 dc) skip next 2 st, slst in next st, skip next 2 st] repeat to end (9 points), fasten off and tack down the points of the crown to the hat. Sew small poms or 1" bells to tips of jester points.
