Heirloom Rose Medallions Shawl: Challenging and Rewarding Traditional Lace Knitting Project

Pattern illustration

The Heirloom Rose Medallions Shawl was the only pattern without an illustration in the 1949 Beehive Shawls booklet. You'll find here a charted adaptation of the original instructions, to un-earth the delicate beauty of this one-hundred-and-sixtyyear old lace shawl design. We are about to start a demanding but extremely rewarding journey through the land of traditional knitted lace. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I! - Christelle

Note on round 37 :

Begin round 37 by sliding 1 st. Work rest of row as indicated in the chart until two sts before end of round. End round with k2tog. Slip this last st of right hand needle onto left hand needle. Slip 2nd st on left hand needle over 1st st. Slip this st back to right hand needle thus having 1 st instead of 3 and so closing the petal. Be very careful not to drop the yo in the process.

MAKE UP

Slip 17 sts of one medallion onto a needle and 17 sts of another medallion onto another needle. Place the 2 needles together, wrong sides facing and graft the 2 medallions together. With the ends of wool left at the corners, sew the corner seams being careful to match patterns and keep seams elastic. Join medallions together in this manner to form a square of 4 medallions by 4 medallions. With right side of work facing, join wool to each group of 17 sts left on a thread around outside edge and cast-off loosely. Beginning at one corner, sew the border around the shawl, gathering it at the corners to keep work flat. Sew evenly to keep work from binding. Sew the bind-off edge of the border to the cast-on edge. Block and parade with shawl to family, friends, colleagues and people in the street and feel immensely proud of yourself.
