Crocodile Rock
I don't know about you, but I'm constantly underestimating how simple a pattern has to be for my husband to want to wear it. This sock-based on Jacquard Diamonds from p. 24 of Barbara Walker's "Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns"-strikes the right balance between something simple enough that he'll want to wear it, but interesting enough that you'll want to knit it. The slipped stitches are great for highlighting variegated yarn (in manly variegated colors, of course!).

INSTRUCTIONS
Loosely cast on 56 sts. Join for knitting in the round, making sure not to twist. Work 20 rounds of [kl, p1] ribbing. Work Chart A around until sock measures 9" from caston edge, or desired length, ending after row 14. Work Chart A over 28 sts (instep). Hold instep sts aside (on cable or waste yarn) while working heel flap. HEEL FLAP (WORKED OVER 28 STS) Row 1 (RS): [Sl1, k1] 14 times. Row 2 (wS): Sl1, p to end. Repeat these two rows 14 times more (30 rows total). EELIUKIN Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k18, turn. Row 2 (WS): Sl1, k9, turn. Row 3: Sl1, k to 1 st before the gap from previous turn, k2tog, k1, turn. Row 4: Sl1, p to 1 st before the gap, p2tog, p1, turn. Repeat rows 3 & 4 until all sts have been worked, ending after row 4. Sl1, k17. Pu&k 15 sts along edge of heel flap, pm, pu&k 1 st. Work Chart A across instep sts, pm. Pu&k 16 sts along other edge of heel flap. You have now turned a heel

(or your vice of choice). So, why did you place the first marker 1 st before the instep? Because you're gonna borrow that st from the heel and give it to the instep. You now have 29 instep sts, which will allow you to make the pattern symmetrical down the foot. GUSSET Rnd 1: K until 3 sts before m, k2tog, k1. Work Chart B to m. K1, ssk. Rnd 2: K to m, work Chart B to m. ese two rounds until 56 sts remain. Kto m (to return to beginning of round) Work Chart B to m, k to m. Rep this round until sock measures 9.5" from heel, or 1.5" less than desired length. Remove m, k1, pm.
