ZISSLY LEAF SHAWL NO: 1

I have tried tis pattern twice now, but never ended in the attended form that I wanted it to be. I am a very slow knitter... The shawl in all pictures is for an example and have 5 Estonian Leaf repeats, 3 feather leaf repeats +border and 5 edge stitch. Total 140 rows. Knitted with needle size EU: 4 m, US: 6, CA/UK: 8 gives the middle a length of 68 cm. approx. 26,7 inches The shawl that I intended it to look like is what I am going to describe in this pattern.
SHAWL SIZE

Feel free to increase the size. But for the best result double pattern AA +BB equal times meaning +24 rows/increase. My intended shawl have 8 Estonian leaf repeats and 2 feather leaf repeats. The shawl is made of 164 rows. Knitted with a needle size 4mm will make a bigger shoulder shawl approx. 80cm / 31,4 inches. To count your "size to be" you have to make a gauge swatch and measure it.I am used to make a square bigger than 10X10 cm. Another option is 3X3 inches. The shawl lace pattern will increase the shawl length a little. Measure 3x3 inches and count stitches and rows/3 inch. Now you can calculate rows/inch. This will give you roughly the minimum middle length. Or measure and count stitches and rows/10 cm.

How much yarn???
Wel... I can't tell the exact amount of yarn, but I can give a hint of both kniting time and amount of yarn. Yarn is measured in weight and meters. This shawl is best in thin yarn that gives more meters/weight. So... This shawl has a moon shape and this is a way to estimate the amount of yar If you knit 50% of all the rows. That is approx. the same as 1/5 of the total shawl. If you knit 1/3 of all the rows. That is approx. the same as 1/11 of the total shawl. Picture below is of the intended shawl propotions @

The first pattern is the Estonian leaf/flower pattern, but it origins from Elizabeth Freemans Laminaria shawl pattern. URL: http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring08/PATTlaminaria.html You have to decide how wide edge you wanna have. The shawl in picture have 5 extra edge stitches. This means additional +10 stitches. I will count +10 extra edge stitch in my description. For complete chart. See the end of this description. Start with 7 stitches. Knit until fourth knit row. Pick up 3 more stitches at the side of the end of fourth “knit" row. Do the same when you “purl" back by picking up 3 more stitch in the end of the knitted edge. You should have 13 stitches by now. The pattern will need 3 stitches only to begin. The rest of the stitches will become the edge.

The angel of " \3 " or " 2/ " shows with direction that decrease will lean towards. For example “ /3\ " means Knit 3 stitch together, but the middle stitch should remain in front. All this is optional recommendations that helps to highlight the patterns. I highly recommend that this is followed for best result. Follow chart AA and complete row 1-94 = 8 Big Estonian leaf at center. One Estonian leaf repeat is 12 rows.
TRANSECTION PART:
This part combines 2 different patterns. Be aware that all stitch/row isn't shown in the pattern chart after AA. Transcription lace is 16 rows. Complete row 95-110 = one pattern repeat. Do not forget to increase +1 in both sides of row 109.
BB. FEATHER LEAF LACE:
Now. The easiest part of them all. One feather leaf lace is 12 rows. Complete row 111 - 134 = two pattern repeat.
CC. THE EDGE AND THE END:
Remember to knit /3\ so the middle stitch comes at the front if you haven't done that yet. The edge leaf pattern is the same as for the center in AA. Start with “CC RIGHT EDGE" and remember to change the stitch column in the left endof“CCREPEAT”to“CCLEFTEDGE" CC border is 32 rows. Complete row 135 - 163 = 0one pattern repeat. This pattern has a white YO on blue background. This YO must be knitted as “purl & knit" when you purl back theknitted row. The last row has a /5\ decrease between leafs. The center stitch has to be at the front, see description in thechart.
Cast off the edge = row 164:
Use your favorite way or just purl 2tog, move back to left needle and purl 2tog, again. Repeat until all stitches are done. The shawl in the picture has crochet binding of. There is a guide witch stitches to bind together in the chart. Each loop consist of 12 crochet stitches. Each loop connects 3 stitches, except at the edge depending on how wide edge you have chosen. Attach all loose threads block (wet/stretch). The shawl is completed? It has been a great honor to be your guide. Problem?? Just e-mail soft_dragon@hotmail.com If you need bigger chart, I can provide that, or find faults etc. etc... Just e-mail Happy knitting ! /Chandrastar//
