Pumpkin tam

Materials: Worsted weight yarn two shades of orange, green Hooks: H hook (4.5mm), I hook (5.0mm) Yarn needle Sizes: Follow the same instructions, no matter the size, using different sized hooks. Use a G or H hook for newborn to toddler sizes. Use I hook for child to adult. Adjust the hat size by tightening the "band" rows at the end. Gauge: 4 inches = 12sc and 4 rounds Note: Join at the end of each round with a sl st to the beginning st. With I hook, one strand of green, Ch 6, join to make a circle (note: i do not use magic loop to begin the stem because I leave the circle open). 1. Sc 6 in the ring. 2. Ch 1, in back loops only (BLO), sc in each stitch to end of round. 3. Ch 1, sc in each stitch to end of round. 4. \*2sc in stitch, sc in next\*, working in a spiral, repeat until there are 12sts. 5. Ch 2, \*2dc in ea st\*, repeat to end of round. (24sts) 6. Ch 2, \*2dc in st, dc in next\*, repeat to end of round. (36sts) 7. Ch 2, \*2dc in st, dc in next 2\*, repeat to end of round. (48sts) 8. Change to orange yarn. From this point on hold two strands of yarn (or a bulky weight could be used). Ch 2, \*2dc in st, dc in next 3\*, repeat to end of round. (60sts) 9. Ch 2, \*2dc in st, dc in next 4, 2dc in st, dc in next 3, Fpdc around next post\*, repeat to end of round. 10. Ch 2, \*2dc in st, dc in next 5, 2dc in st, dc in next 4, Fpdc around next post\*, repeat to end of round. 11-13. Ch 2, \*Ch 2, dc in next 12, Fpdc\* (make sure this lines up with Fpdc from previous round. If adjust the number of dc inbetween), repeat to end of round. 14. Ch 2, \*dc, dc2tog, dc2tog, dc in next 2, dc, dc2tog, dc2tog, Fpdc\*, repeat to end of round. 15. Ch 2, dc in each stitch to end of round. Band: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st around to end, join. (note: make sure not to crochet too tightly for this row because it will affect the size of the hat). Check the size of the hat. Its a "slouchy tam" so it will not fit snuggly at the top of the head, but needs to fit the circumference so as to not slide down. If too big: Use a size smaller hook or decrease a few stitches for the remaining band rows. If just right: Continue with same hook and tension. If too small: Remove sc row and use a larger hook or add a few stitches. Band, continued: Ch 1, sc each stitch around for desired amount of rounds. Sample has 3 rounds of sc. Make the band as wide or narrow as desired. Vine: With green and I hook, sl st into a stitch near base of stem. Ch 70. 2 hdc in third ch from hook. \*hdc 3, 3hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of ch. You will be back to the stem. Sl st into stem. Finish off. Weave in all ends. Thread tip of vine through a yarn needle. Weave vine in and out of green section at top of hat, leaving it loose inbetween. This will attach the vine so it doesn't slide off.
Variations
Regular tam: This makes a very cute tam for everyday, without the stem. For a bulky tam use two strands and I hook, as above. For a lighter weight tam, use one strand and a G or H hook. Begin the tam with main hat color, ch 6 (or magic loop) and join to make a circle. 1. Ch 1, 2sc in each stitch to end of round. (12sts) Follow instructions above, starting at #5. Do not change colors when instructed. Decoration: This is such a cute pumpkin and would be really fun as a decoration also. Slip over a round object, such as a deep bowl turned upside down or styrofoam ball. This way it can still be worn. It could also be stuffed and the bottom sewn closed. HEAD AND HAT SIZE CHART for brand new babies to adult men
I prefer to make hats approx 1" smaller than the head circumference so they will stretch and not be too big. Note: All measurements are approximate and based on "average" head sizes according to several online sources. Hat "height" is the measurement from top of crown to bottom edge.
