Any way you like scarf

This is a sweet little scarf, about 110cm long and 15cm wide, for those cool days when you want something around your neck that will take the chill off but don't want anything too warm or bulky. It takes only a small quantity of yarn - perfect for that impulse buy or yarn left over from another project. And if you have a button box, this is an opportunity to make use of some of those spare buttons. The scarf can be worn in a variety of ways - tucked just inside a jacket, secured with one or both of the button toggles, with the separate band wrapped around and fastened with one or both button toggles, with the band attached vertically....any way you like. I believe this stitch is known as brioche stitch. I found it in an old 19th Century pattern book Online. You will need: King Cole Bamboo cotton DK - 100g 4mm (size 8) needles 2 large buttons, any size you like 2 small buttons, no bigger than 1cm in diameter
Scarf
Cast on 50 stitches and knit 2 rows Pattern row: Slip1, \*[yo, sl1, k2tog] repeat from \* 16 times, k last stitch Repeat pattern row until desired length is reached Knit 2 rows (50sts in each), then cast off
Band
Knit the same as the scarf but only do 10 pattern rows between first 2 and last 2 knit rows.
Button toggle
Using a strong thread, join the two buttons back to back making sure that there is about 1cm between them. I strengthened the joining thread by adding a series of blanket stitches along its length. An alternative is to use elastic cord to join the buttons.
Abbreviations:
sl1 slip one stitch (knitwise) k2tog knit 2 sts together yo yarn over (creating an extra stitch)
Helpful hints:
When you come to the last two knit rows your stitches will be arranged in pairs with one crossing over the other (the ones you previously did as k2tog); knit the longer cross over stitch second, after the first one of the pair. When you wear the scarf, the toggle can be placed wherever you fancy - just push the small button through to the back of the scarf/band. If you have only 1o0 g of yarn, make the band first then the scarf.
