about YouKnits
Design your personal pattern by combining the Youknits just as you like - they will always match as well horizontally as vertically (although I must admit that some look better near each other than others ;-)). Mostly the patterns will flow into each other and you won't be able to tell where one YouKnit ends and the other starts afterwards :) With YouKnits you can create most beautiful items: of course scarves and shawls, but also sweaters, tops, vests and even hats and bags; see the ravelry pattern page of the YouKnits Basic Set for a lot of examples: http:/ /www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/youknits-lace-basic-set
YouKnits designer:
Because I find it very difficult to imagine how a pattern will look from charts or text instructions, a friend made us the YouKnits designer that you can find at my website: http: / /www.unikatissima.de/shop/?page_id=494 The use of the YouKnits designer is free, it will provide you with a PDF file containing - a picture of your design, a distribution chart for the YouKnits and a list of links where you can get the individual YouKnits. show your item: I opened a group unikatissima at ravelry where you can discuss this pattern and my other patterns, too. You can register at ravelry with a username and a valid email address only, for all other information about you it's up to you whether you give them (at least it was like this when I registered ;-)) URLS: www.ravelry.com www.ravelry.com/groups/unikatissima

YouKnits how-to
how to knit with YouKnits
design:
The YouKnits patterns are meant to be combined, so you must first have an idea about which YouKnits you want to knit in what order. The free YouKnits designer is made to help you designing your personal pattern (http: / /www.unikatissima.de/shop/?page_id=494).
example:
Let's consider the picture and YouKnits distribution chart of the following example, provided for free by the YouKnits designer mentioned above: 004 #00 means YouKnit 004 found in set #00 in YouKnits designer

004 #00 | 057 #00 | 004 #00 |
057 #00 | 004 #00 | 057 #00 |
004 #00 | 057 #00 | 004 #00 |
057 #00 means YouKnit 057 found in set #00 in YouKnits designer and you see the places where to knit the appropriate YouKnits cast on: number of YouKnits x 16 stitches + 2 stitches (first and last) + 2 stitches (edge stitches at begin and end) cast-on for example above: 3 x 16 = 48 sts +2 + 2sts +2 + 2 sts = 52 sts
note:
You will need the edge stitches to knit the yarn overs at begin and end of rows; you can use more than 2 edge stitches if you knit a broader edge, e.g. if you knit 4 sts in garter stitch on both sides
note:
The triangular YouKnits are to be knitted differently, see pages 8 et sqq. back rows: The charts and the text instructions show only the rows on the right side, knit all back rows or purl all back rows, with the latter your item will be in garter stitch and won't curl. Personally I prefer stockinette and purled all back rows in the swatches for the YouKnits designer.

YouKnits how-to
how to knit with YouKnits
YouKnits patterns:
Every YouKnit pattern consists of 16 stitches x 32 rows. They can be repeated and/or combined in both directions. The swatches that I knitted for the YouKnits designer were very nearly square. You start every row with the YouKnit-rowknitting C lastC 1-16B 1-16A 1-16Afirst knit the repeat parts of your different YouKnits (stitches 1-16 in charts, from \* to \* in text instructions), then knit the last stitch at the very end. To connect YouKnits vertically, you - knit the rows 1 to 32 of your different YouKnits, - then knit the last 2 rows at the end, i.e. rows 33 + 34. See also examples on next pages.

symbols / abbreviations:
k -knit yo-yarn over sl-k2tog-psso slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over k2tog - knit 2 together or other right decrease ssk - slip 1, slip 1, knit both together or other left decrease sl-k2tog-psso OR ssk - depending on what happens around slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over OR slip 1, slip 1, knit both together

k OR k2tog - depending on what happens around knit OR knit 2 together important note: if you knit / from , don't knit the that follows the!
about the stitch choice:
The chart symbols with two knit symbols ( and ) (or (sl-k2tog-psso OR ssk) and (k OR k2tog) in the text instructions, resp.) are in fact nothing else than a warning: "Look what happens around this place and see whether you have to knit the one or the other stitch." > See example about the stitch choice on the next pages; the example is made both as chart and as text instruction.
YouKnits how-to
how to connect YouKnits
The following example shows an item of 3 by 2 YouKnits and how to connect them. As said in about the stitch choice on page 4 the double stitch symbols are just a warning to look what happens before and after (and over and below) the stitch and then decide what to knit. The example shows a lot of situations, where choices are to be made and which one would be the right (or sometimes only the more beautiful) choice. example:

003b #00 | 004 #00 | 003b #00 |
003b #00 | 004 #00 | 003b #00 |
That's the chart for the example, I coloured in green all stitches that you may not knit (or should not knit), so knit only the black symbols:

Don't forget: every yo needs a decrease, that means a k2tog on its right side or a ssk on its left side or, if you have 2 yo's, a sl-k2tog-psso between them. All content (text, pictures, etc) of this document is protected by copyright Please note: by using this instruction you agree to my terms of use which you can find on page 1

In the example text on the next page I marked the stitches that you may not knit (or should not knit) as crossed out italic text, thus (st-k2tog-psso OR ssk) means ssk. Don't forget: every yo needs a decrease, that means a k2tog before or a ssk after or, if you have 2 yo's, a sl-k2tog-psso between them. example:

how to connect YouKnits
The Youknits triangles are special and are to be used a little differently because they are not meant to be repeated and because they will increase or decrease the total stitches. On the next pages I describe how to connect them to the square YouKnits and to each other at the corners. For the connection of the square YouKnits see pages 5 et sqq., for the connection of the YouKnits triangles to each other at the corners see pages 14 et sqq.
