Hitini
by Susan Luni
The Cuff-down Version
The Hitini pattern provides instructions and a color guide that will allow you to use your bits of leftover sock yarn to knit chevron striped socks.

This version of the Hitini pattern is knit cuff-down. The chevron pattern flows through this sock from the garter-stitch cuff to the Chevron Toe, following the Color Guide that promotes a smooth transition between colors. The patterning is echoed in the slip-stitch heel flap. If you are looking for a less complex knit, substitute a plain toe for the Chevron Toe. Either way, you get a beautiful sock from leftovers. Materials: Approximately 400 yards of yarn in 12 or more different but related colorways, including 100 yards of MC, 50 yards of one CC for the heel and 25 yds of each CC. Gauge: 28 sts and 44 rounds=4"/10cm. in st st. 42 sts and 72 rows=4"/10 cm. in slip-stitch pattern. 40 sts and 44 rounds=4"/10 cm. in chevron stitch pattern. The chevron stitch pattern is inelastic. It is advisable to adjust needle sizes to accommodate shaping. Due to the difference in gauge between the two stitch patterns used in the foot, there are more sts in the instep than in the sole. Take time to save time, check gauge. Needles: US 2 (2.25 mm.), set of 5 dpns, or size needed to obtain correct gauge. Size: 6"/15 cm. (8"/20 cm.) leg circumference. Notions: stitch markers, both removable and non-removable; tapestry needle. Abbreviations and Special Stitches CC: Contrasting color. D: Deep, 4-round stripe in Color Guide. Dpns: Double pointed needles. K2tog: Knit two stitches together K: Knit. M1l: Make one left--with left needle tip, lift strand between needles from front to back. Knit lifted loop through the back. Modified M1l: yarn over the needle from front to back; knit the yarn over through the back loop in the next round. M1r: Make one right--with left needle tip, lift strand between needles from back to front. Knit lifted loop through the front. Modified M1r: yarn over the needle from back to front; knit the yarn over through the front loop in the next round. MC: Main color. N: Needle; N1=Needle 1; N2=Needle 2, etc. P2tog: Purl two stitches together P: Purl. Pm: Place marker. RS: Right side. S: Shallow, 2-round stripe in Color Guide. S2kp: Slip 2, knit, pass--Slip the next two stitches together as if to knit. Knit the third stitch and pass the two slipped stitches over it. Sm: slip marker. Ssk: Slip, Slip, knit--slip 1 st knitwise, slip the next st knitwise, knit these two slipped stitches together through the back loops. When the second stitch is a backwards yarn over, work as slip one knitwise, slip one purlwise, and knit these two slipped stitches together through the backloops. St(s): Stitch(es). St st: Stockinette stitch. WS: Wrong side.

The pair of socks in the photo on the right were knit with only two colors of yarn: one colorway is self striping; the other is solid blue. The solid blue was used in the cuff and heel. It was also used to break up the sections of the self-striping colorway with solid blue stripes.
Stitch Guide:
Chevron Stitch Pattern: (10 st repeat)
Round 1: knit all sts. Round 2: [m1l, k3, s2kp, k3, m1r, k1] 6(8) times. Notes: This pattern is written for an experienced knitter, one familiar with increasing, decreasing, short-rows and frequent color changes. There are a lot of ends to weave into the Work! Color Guide (page 7): D (Deep) denotes a 4-round stripe; S (shallow) denotes a 2-round stripe. Fill in the name for the color as you choose it in the blank area on the right side to help in following the guide in the second repeat. Choose next CC by coordinating with previous CC. i.e. CC2 should be a complement of CC1, or if variegated, CC2 should have one color in common with CC1. End of round: It is helpful to mark the end of the round in the cuff, either with a removable stitch marker or a yarn end that is positioned a few rows below your work. Color changes are made at the end of a round. Once the color changes are established, they will mark the end of the round and the marker will not be needed. In the leg, the end of round is at the back of the leg. The pattern requires increases on either side of the last stitch of the round. These increases will help disguise any unevenness resulting from the color change at the back of the leg. In the foot, the end of round is at the middle of the sole where any unevenness resulting from the color change will not be noticeable. Increases: The instructions for two types of m1 (make one) increases in the abbreviations section on page 2 provide an alternative, modified increase for those who find the standard m1 difficult. All pattern samples were knit with standard increases. Markers: In addition to the removable stitch marker that is used to mark the end of the round, stitch markers (removable or not) may be used to mark the division between multiple repeats of the stitch pattern on the same needle. Instructions:
Cuff:
With MC, cast on 60(80) sts on 4 dpns. With a 5th dpn, join and begin the Cuff Stitch Pattern: Round 1 : purl all sts. Round 2: [m1l, k3, s2kp, k3, m1r, k1] 6 (8) times, placing markers between repeats as noted above. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 of Cuff Stitch Pattern 3 more times, knitting the 4th and 5th rounds and the final round with CC1, changing colors on a pattern round.
Leg:
Follow Color Guide (page 7), and Chevron Stitch Pattern on page 3. Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until leg measures 7"/18 cm. or desired length, ending with Round 1 in MC. Note: Round 1 is knit; Round 2 of Chevron Stitch Pattern is the same as Cuff Stitch Pattern.
Heel Set-up Round:
For 6"/15 cm.--with MC, work s2kp decrease in first repeat of the Chevron Stitch Pattern in Round 1 before the heel as k2tog and the s2kp decrease in the last repeat of that round as ssk. Use the sts in the first and last repeat (22 sts), plus 5 sts in each of the second and fifth repeats to total 32 sts for the heel. For 8"/20 cm.--with MC, work the first two and last two repeats of the Chevron Stitch Pattern as [k4, s2kp, k3] Use the 32 sts on N1 and N4 for heel.
Heel Flap:
Break MC and CC, slip 16 sts purlwise, turn work, with MC, purl across 32 sts, turn. With CC, begin Chevron Heel Flap Chart, page 8. Knit all RS rows and purl all WS rows, changing color every 2 rows. Continue until heel flap is 2"/5 cm. (2.25")/5.7 cm. in length by working 3 repeats (plus rows 1-4) of the 12-row chart.
Heel Turn:
With MC, Row 1: (RS) sl1, k17, ssk, k1, turn. Row 2: (WS) sl1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 3: (Rs) sl1, k to 1 st before gap, ssk across gap, k1, turn. Row 4: (Ws) sl1, p to 1 st before gap, p2tog across gap, p1, turn. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all heel sts have been worked, ending the final RS row with ssk, and the final WS row with p2tog. Finish heel turn by knitting across last row with MC. 18 sts remain on the heel.
Gusset:
Round 1: With MC, pick up 18 (20) sts along side of heel flap, knit across instep, pick up 18 (20) sts on second side of heel flap, k9, mark end of round. Begin gusset decreases: Round 2: With CC, knit to last 3 sts on N1, k2tog, k1, work instep in pattern, following instructions below for chosen size, k1, ssk, knit to end of round. After heel, work instep pattern as follows, placing markers as noted: 6"/15 cm.--k2tog, k2, m1r, k1 pm, [m1l, k3, s2kp, k3, m1r, k1] twice, pm, m1l, k3, ssk; 8"/20 cm.--[m1l, k3, s2kp, k3, m1r, k1], four times, pm between the first and second repeats and between the third and fourth repeats. On subsequent rounds, slip markers as you come to them. Following Color Guide (page 7), continue to decrease as in round 2, knitting all odd-numbered rounds in st st until 54 (72) sts remain.
Foot:
Knit sole sts, work instep in pattern above until foot is desired length, starting toe when 1.75"/4.5 cm. (2.75"/7 cm.) remain to be worked, ending with a full stripe of CC.
Chevron Toe:
Begin toe with MC. All MC toe stripes are 4 rounds, alternated with 4 rounds of CC. Follow written instructions below and on page 6 for your chosen size or appropriate Chevron Toe Chart for your chosen size on pages 9-11. For a plain toe, repeat round 26 every other round until 20 sts remain. For 6"/15 cm.--Knit all odd-numbered rounds.
