Finished Sizes: 12"(14", 15", 16", 17", 18", 19", 20", 21", 22") circumference (Note: Pattern is very stretchy, knit the size that is 2" smaller than the actual circumference that you need to fit the intended wearer to have a good fit.) Gauge: 4.5 sts and 6 rows = 1" on US 9 needles in stockinette stitch Yarn: Vanna's Choice or any worsted weight that knits to gauge Tools: Crown: Size 9 (5.5 mm) straight needles or small diameter(9") circular needle (or size needed to obtain gauge) and/or set of 4 DPNs, stitch markers, 4mm crochet hook, yarn needle, tape measure Skills: knitting, purling, knitting in the round, knitting on double-pointed-needles (DPNs), cable cast on, crochetchain
Textured Stitch - knit flat:
Row 1: \*K1, yo, K2tog\* repeat from \* to last st, K1 Row 2: K1, \*K1, P1, K1\* repeat from \* to end Row 3: \*K1, K2tog, yo\* repeat from \* to last st, K1 Row 4: K1, \*P1, K2\* repeat from \* to end
Textured Stitch -knit in the round:
Round 1: \*P1, K1, P1\* repeat from \*to last st K1 Round 2: \*K1, K2tog, yo\* repeat from \* to last st, P1 Round 3: \*P2, K1\* repeat from \* to last st, P1 Round 4: \*K1, yo, K2tog\* repeat from \* to last st, K1 Hat Instructions: This first portion is knit back and forth on straight needles. On straight needles cast on 40 (46, 52, 58, 64, 70, 76, 82,88,94) stitches For all sizes: Starting with ROw 1 of the textured stitch pattern and knitting back and forth with straight needles, knit for 9 rows (1 pattern repeat plus 1 row) At the end of row 9, cable cast on 12 sts. (See video if you have not done this before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFkYejFGwsl You should now have 52 (58, 64, 70, 76, 82, 88, 94, 100, 106) sts on your needles for the remainder of the hat.
This portion is knit in the round.
Place a st marker and join to knit in the round. The first row will beround 1 of the textured st pattern worked in the round. Work in the pattern until your piece measures 4",(5",5.25",5.75",6",6.5",7",7.25", 7.75", 8") from the cast on edge at the center back of the hat, ending after completing round 1 (Ilf you just completed round 4, then knit round 1 and then move onto the decreases). Then, begin decrease rounds, switching to dpns when you can no longer fit the stitches around your circular needle comfortably.
Decrease Rounds:
Dec Round 1: \*K2tog, P1\* to last st, P1 Round 2: Folow directions for the size you are working. (NB, 6-12M, 6-10Y, A-Lg) \*K1, K2tog, yo\* repeat to last 2 sts, K2 (0-3M, 1-2Y, A-Sm) \*K1, K2tog, yo\* repeat to end (3-6M, 3-5Y, A-Md) \*K1, K2tog, yo\* repeat to last st, K1 Dec Round 3: (NB, 6-12M, 6-10Y, A-Lg) \*P2tog, K1\* repeat to last 2 sts, K2 (0-3M, 1-2Y, A-Sm) \*P2tog, K1\* repeat to end (3-6M, 3-5Y, A-Md) \*P2tog, K1\* repeat to last st, K1 Round 4: (NB, A-Sm, A-Md, A-Lg) \*K1, yo, K2tog\* repeat to end (0-3M, 3-6M, 6-12M) \*K1, yo, K2tog\* repeat to last 2 sts, K2 (1-2Y, 3-5Y, 6-10Y) \*K1, yo, K2tog\* repeat to last st, K1 DecRound 5: (NB, 0-3M, 6-12M, 1-2Y, 6-10Y, A-Sm, A-Lg) \*K2tog\* repeattoend (3-6M, 3-5Y, A-Md) \*K2tog\* repeat to end, K1 In order to close up the hole on the top a bit tighter on the larger sizes you will need to repeat decrease round 5 once more. Break yarn and with your yarn needle slip each stitch purlwise off of the needles and tighten to close the hole at the top. Weave in ends.
Finishing:
Using crochet needle, slip stitch into the bottom right corner of the gap at the bottom front of the hat. Chain 12 sts and slip stitch to join at the bottom of the opposite edge at the bottom front of the hat. Next, a few sts up, slip stitch into another stitch on the right side, chain 5, slip stitch into the 6th and 7th st of the chain below, chain 5 and slip stitch to attach to the opposite side of the hat a fewrowsupfrom the first chain. The last chain will be a few sts up, repeat the instructions for the 2nd chain, being sure to slip st into the 6th and 7th stitches of the chain below.
