Kellingesjal 1897 ; recreation from Vendsyssel historiske Museum, Denmark

The shawl is a Danish 'Bindesjal' from 1897. It belongs to Vendsyssel historiske Museum, Denmark. The kaellingesjal is from 1897; it has elegant borders and a band of stockinette fabric. When I began the work of reconstructing the pattern, I thought these were only ornamental elements added to the traditional tie-shawl. However, when I wrapped up in the finished shawl, crossed the wings across my chest, and tied the borders round my waist, I realized that these decorations had a practical use for the working woman who wore this scarf for everyday use. · The border ties up more comfortably than cords. · The band of stockinette fabric is more elastic than Garter Stitch. It snuggles up your shoulders and keep your shawl in place. The top border creates a useful lapel you can fold or unfold round your neck.

· My gauge was 20 sts / ${10~\mathsf{c m}}$ . The original was 28 sts/10cm. But gauge is not essential. $300~\mathfrak{g}$ wool of dk weight. Needles $3,5~\mathsf{m m}$ . Hook 3,5 mm
Basic recipe:
· Cast on 14 sts and work the 10 cm wide "Lace Bottom Border" for as long as you wish.(Mine was a wing span ) After the last repeat you do no bind off but continue to · The bottom border center. · Continue to work the lace bottom border. Bind off · Along the top edge of bottom border, crochet two rows of half double crochet. The crocheted rows begin and end ${18~\mathsf{c m}}$ from the cast on/bind off edges. · Pick up stitches for the shawl along the crocheted edge. How many stitches depend on how long your bottom lace band is. (I had ${}^{300~+}$ center stitch) · Begin decreasing rows in pattern · Row 1 : Sl1, (k2 tog)twice, work to center stitch, knit center stitch, k2 tog. Knit to end. Repeat row 1 until you have 2/3 of the original number of stitches left. · Row 2 : Sl 1, k2 tog, work to center stitch, knit center stitch, $^{\mathsf{k}2}$ tog, knit to end. Repeat row two until you have 5 stitches left. Bind off. · Note: Slip stitch very loosely. · Pattern: work 8 garter ridges, 28 rows of stockinette fabric (4 knit-8 purl-4 knit-8 purl- 4 knit). Continue in Garter Stitch. · Work the 5 cm top border separately. I used the same lace pattern as bottom border, only half as wide for 18 cm+top edge of shawl $+18$ cm. · Stitch top border and top edge of the shawl together including the first and the last 18 cm of bottom border. · Work the tips of the borders : pick up stitches along the edges. Work lace pattern and decrease in the middle at the same time till you have 3 sts left. Break yarn, pull through.
Writing these notes has been very difficult and I was planning not to publish them. However, you can use them as a help in your own interpretation of this old shawl. Have fun!
