The shawl is a Danish 'Bindesjal' from 1897.

It has elegant borders and a band of stockinette fabric. When I began the work of reconstructing the pattern, I thought these were only ornamental elements added to the traditional tie-shawl. However, when I wrapped up in the finished shawl, crossed the wings across my chest, and tied the borders round my waist, I realized that these decorations had a practical use for the working woman who wore this scarf for everyday use.

· The border ties up more comfortably than cords. · The band of stockinette fabric is more elastic than Garter Stitch. It snuggles up your shoulders and keep your shawl in place. . The top border creates a useful lapel you can fold or unfold round your neck. The bottom border was knit first, then crocheted a couple of rows of half double crochet on its top edge, picked up stitches from the crochet and knit the rest to the top. Next, the top border was knit and then sewn to the top edge. Last, the tips of the borders were knit. The pattern for the border is easily memorized. A few repeats and you do not need a chart. · My gauge was 20 sts / 10 cm. The original was 28 sts/10cm. However, gauge is not essential. · 300 g wool of dk weight. I used Gotlandsk Pelsuld from Filcolana · Needles 3,5 mm. Hook 3,5 mm Cast on 14 stitches and follow the written instructions for the Bottom border.

( How long depends which size you are. You can tie together a couple of scarves, pretend they are the border, cross them over your breast and tie in the back) Half of my border is a wingspan. When you have done half of Bottom border, continue to and work Center border. After that, work second half of Bottom border, bind off. Work two rows of crochet like this: 1. crochet row (Right side of the border facing you): Begin 18 cm from right edge. Make 1 hdc in every stitch until 18 cm from left side of the border. Turn 2. crochet row(increase row) Work 9 hdc per 8 sts which is one in 7 sts and 2 sts in the eighth. Continue like this till the end of first crochet row. With your circular, pick up stitches, one in each stitch from the crochet. Make sure it is an odd number of stitches. Mark center stitch. Make a note on how many stitches you pick up.

The rest of the shawl is knit like this in \*\*pattern. Knit every row and begin decreasing: Bind off 2 stitches, knit to center stitch, knit 2 tog. (center stitch + next stitch). Repeat this row until you have 2/3 of the original number of stitches left. For the rest of the shawl you decrease like this: Bind off 1 stitch, knit to center stitch, knit 2 tog. (center stitch + next stitch). Work until there are 5 to 6 stitches left. Bind off. \*\*Pattern Work the shawl in pattern lik Knit 12 rows(6 garter ridges Continue like this: Row 1 knit Row 2 purl Row 3 knit Row 4 purl Row 5 purl Row 6 knit Row 7 purl Row 8 knit Row 9 purl Row 10 knit Row 11 knit Row 12 purl Row 13 knit Row 14 purl Row 15 purl Row 16 knit Row 17 purl Row 18 knit Row 19 purl Row 20 knit Row 21 knit Row 22 purl Row 23 knit Row 24 purl Row 25 and every row : knit = garter stitch.

The Top border is worked separately. Sew Top border to top edge of the shawl including the first and the last 18 cm of bottom border. I used overcast stitch. Work the tips of the borders : pick up stitches along left border edge, right side facing you. Work lace, decreasing middle stitches until you have 3 sts left. Break yarn, pull through. Work same for the right edge.

Weave in ends. Block.
