BucKet Hat


Materials
Yarn: worsted weight yarn in a variety of colors. Buckets, similar to those shown above. Crochet Hooks: G, I Miscellaneous: yarn needle, black buttons for snowman Gauge: 4" = 9 rounds and 11 hdc Round: around fattest part is 29", across base is 5" Rectangle-ish: around bucket, right below brim is 24", across base is 5" Two different bucket sizes are included, along with adjustments for hat versions (childadult). Notes: Please look over ENTIRE pattern before beginning. This pattern is worked in the round, unless stated to join. Work in a continuous spiral, placing a marker at the beginning of each round. Directions for ROuND pumpkin bucket: With I hook and orange yarn, Ch 6 (or magic loop of 6sts), join and pull closed. 1. 2sc in each stitch around (12sts). 2. Repeat previous round (24sts). 3. \*hdc 3, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (30sts) 4. \*hdc 4, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (36sts) 5. \*hdc 5, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (42sts) 6. \*hdc 6, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (48sts) 7. \*hdc 7, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (50sts) Change to green. 24. Ch 2, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. Ch 2. 25. \*FPDC 2, BPDC 2\*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join, ch 2. Change to darker green. Ch 2. 26. \*FPDC 2, BPDC 2\*, repeat to end of round. 27. Repeat previous round. Change to lighter green. Ch 2. 28. \*FPDC 2, BPDC 2\*, repeat to end of round. Sl st to join, then finish off and weave in ends. 6 (or magic loop of 6sts), join and pull closed. 1. 2sc in each stitch around (12sts). 2. Ch 2. 19-22. \*FPDC 2, BPDC 2\*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join, ch 2. Finish off and weave in ends. Note: for this shape of bucket, where top is wider then bottom, I found it necessary to cinch the top in to hold in place. Use a long piece of matching yarn and a yarn needle to weave the yarn in and out of last round's stitches. Slightly cinch in enough to hold in place, then tie a knot or bow and hide tails. Directions for extra slouchy hat (made from ROUND bucket pattern): With I hook, Ch 6 (or magic loop of 6sts), join and pull closed.

Change to a different color to make it look as if a scarf is wrapped around the snowman's neck (i.e. red, blue, green). This will start the ribbing part of the hat. 18. Ch 2, hdc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. Ch 2. 19-22. \*FPDC 2, BPDC 2\*, repeat to end of round, sl st to join, ch 2. 23. Finish off and weave in ends.
FEATURES
Pumpkin
Eyes (make 2): With G hook and black yarn, ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Sc in same st and across until 2 sts remain, sc2tog, ch 1, turn. \*Sc in same st, sc2tog, sc in each st across, ch 1, turn\*, repeat until no sts remain. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing in placewith a yarn needle. Pupils (make 2): With G hook and orange yarn, magic circle of 6 sts, or preferred method. Finish off, leaving a tail for attaching with a yarn needle. Nose: With G hook and black yarn, ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Sc in same st and across until 2 sts remain, sc2tog, ch 1, turn. Sc in same st, sc2tog, sc, ch 1, turn. Sc next 2tog. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing in place with a yarn needle. Smile: With G hook and black yarn, ch 42. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc 3, dc2tog, dc2tog, \*sc 3, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st, sc 3, dc2tog, dc2tog\*, repeat across. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing in place with a yarn needle.
Snowman
Nose: Start with a tail for attaching nose to hat. With G hook and orange yarn, ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc, dc 2, hdc, sc, ch 1, turn. Sc2tog, hdc 2, sc2tog, ch 2, turn. Hdc 4, ch 2, turn. Hdc2tog, ch 2, turn. Hdc 3, ch 2, turn. Hdc2tog, hdc, ch 2, turn. Hdc 2, ch 2, turn. Hdc2tog. Finish off, leaving a yarn tail. Pinch end together and use yarn tail to st point together for approximately 1/2". When attaching nose, use a yarn needle to stitch starting edge and approximately 1-1.5", leaving the rest unattached. Cheeks are brushed on with blush. Mouth is stitched in place with a yarn needle and black yarn. Buttons are sewn in place with sewing needle and black thread. Eyes are also sewn in place.
Handle Cover
With G hook and red yarn, ch until 4" longer then handle. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Change to white yarn. Ch 2, turn. Hdc in same st and in each st across. Change to red yarn. Ch 2, turn. Hdc in same st and in each st across. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing piece around handle. Lay strip on handle and fold in half. Using a yarn needle and yarn tail, sew the long edges together. Use remaining yarn tail to sew handle strip to bucket cover if desired. Finish off and weave in ends. Twist strip piece to resemble a candy cane. Sew opposite end in place with yarn needle and matching yarn if desired. Weave in ends.

I prefer to make hats approximately 1" smaller than the head circumference so they will stretch and not be too big.
