The Ben and Mikkel Hats
These hats are inspired by the Seafarers Cap. As I hate slipstitches, I altered the pattern to avoid too many slipstitches. The Mikkel Hat is for a 4 year old and the Ben Hat is for an adult. They are crocheted from side to side - not top and down. Each hat is easily made in 2 evenings (preferably while watching Orange is The New Black on Netflix)
Hook: 5,5
Yarn:
Drops Love You, 50 g=75 m. 2 skeins dark grey 2 skeins light grey 1 skein white 1 skein blue 1 skein yellow superwash wool 50 g=160 m, using 2 treads. Info: The hat is crocheted from side to side, creating shape by changing from slipstitches (the top of the hat) over sc to hdc. The ribbed ending is sc's.
Tricks
Colour changes from sl to sc: Insert hook, change colour, yarn through.
All other stitches:
The last "pull through both loops": Pull the new colour through. You will now have a stitch that is old colour on the outside - and the new colour on the inside.
The Ben Hat (Adult size)
With blue, chain 39. Turn. (Blue) Skip 1 chain, sc in next 38 chains, ch 1, Turn. Note: Every stitch is now worked in backloops Only!
Round 1
1 Blue: Skip 1 chain, sl in next 6 st 2 White: Sc in next 11 st 3 Dark grey: Hdc in next 12 st 4 Light grey: Sc in next 9 st, Ch 1, Turn.
Round 2
5 Light grey: Sc in next 9 st 6 Dark grey: Hdc in next 12 st 7 White: Sc in next 11 st 8 Blue: sl in next 6 st, ch 1, turn. Repeat round 1 and 2 29 times. Cut of all yarns except the blue. Last round: With blue, sc in 38 stitches, 1 sl, turn and crochet the hat together with sc's. Cut a long piece of yarn after finishing. This yarn is used to weawe through the top of the hat - from the wrong side.
The Mikkel Hat (4-5 year old)
With yeallow, chain 33. Turn. (Yellow) Skip 1 chain, sc in next 32 chains, ch 1, Turn. Note: Every stitch is now worked in backloops Only!
Round 1
1 Yellow: Skip 1 chain, sl in next 6 st 2 White: Sc in next 6 st 3 Dark grey: Hdc in next 10 st 4 Light grey: Sc in next 10 st, Ch 1, Turn.
Round 2
5 Light grey: Sc in next 10 st 6 Dark grey: Hdc in next 10 st 7 White: Sc in next 6 st 8 Yellow: sl in next 6 st, ch 1, turn. Repeat round 1 and 2 27 times. Cut of all yarns except the yellow. Last round: With yellow, sc in 32 stitches, 1 sl, turn and crochet the hat together with sc's. Cut a long piece of yarn after finishing. This yarn is used to weave through the top of the hat - from the wrong side. This makes a more even right side of the hat.
