Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Hat/Mask combo

Pattern notes:
This pattern is for a crochet beanie and attached mask. The mask is attached in two places (near the ears) and left free everywhere else. The mask ties in the back of the head to desired tightness. The twopoint attachment allows the hat to be worn with the mask over the eyes or folded up onto the hat to be out of the way. This pattern contains written instructions and charts.

Sizing:
This hat and mask combo is designed for a young child. The mask will work for most ages and can be attached to any hat. The hat I'm showing here fits ages 5-8, but modification notes are made for a smaller and larger size.

Mask
The mask is worked in two parts. First, the eye cover is worked in the round and the straps are attached afterward. Charts are available on last page of pattern.
Round 1:
Ch 15, sl st to the 1st st to join and make a circle. Ch 1 Ch 15, sl st to the 1st st of this ch15 and make a second circle [At this point, there should be two 15 chain circles connected by a single chain, which should resemble a pair of glasses. This is the center of the mask. This round looks a bit spread out on the chart.]
Round 2:
Ch1, turn 20 sc in the 15 chain circle, sc in the ch1 between the circles, 20 sc in the other 15 chain circle, sc in the back side of the ch1 between the circles, sl st to join [This is the foundation for the mask. This round is also a bit spread out on the chart.]
Round 3:
Ch 3, dc in first st of 20sc circle, \*dc in next st, 2 dc in following st\*, repeat between \* 9 times. Dc3tog in the last st of the 20 sc circle, the sc of the ch1, and the first st of the other 20 sc circle. Alternate 2dc and dc in each st of the other 20 sc circle. Dc in the last sc, sl st to join. Tie off and weave in ends
To attach the straps:
Row 1: Hdc in 6 dc stitches on the side of the mask, ch2, turn Row 2-40: Hdc in each st across, ch 2, turn [The following rows will create a diagonal taper at the end of the straps.] Row 41: Hdc in first 4 sts, sc in 5th st, ch1, turn Row 42: Sc in 2nd st, hdc in next 3 sts, ch2, turn Row 43: Hdc in first 2 sts, sc in 3'd st, ch1, turn Row 44: Sc in 1st st, DC in last st Tie off and weave in ends. Repeat on the other side for the second strap

Hat
Note: This hat fit a 5 year old with a rather large head. Modifications are after the pattern for a smaller/larger hat. Row 1: Magic circle, 12 dc in circle, pull tight, sl st to join [12] Row 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to join [24] Row 3: Ch 2, \*2 dc in first st, 1 dc in next st\*, repeat around between \*, sl st to join [36] Row 4: Ch 2, \*2 dc in first st, 1 dc in next 2 sts\*, repeat around between \*, sl st to join [48] Row 5: Ch 2, \*2 dc in first st, 1 dc in next 11 sts\*, repeat around between \*, sl st to join [52] Row 6-18: Ch2, dc in each st around, sl st to join [52] Tie off, weave in ends.
To fit a smaller child's head:
After Row 4, skip to the instructions for Row 6 and continue until the hat is 16 rows long. [48 stitches per round]
To fit an adult's head:
For Row 5, Ch2, \*2 dc in first st, 1 dc in next 5 sts\*, repeat around between \*, sl st to join [56] Work row 6-18 as described, 56 sts per round The picture below is of the small sized hat. The hat described in the pattern fit him well.. but try reasoning with a 5 year old :)

Attachment
Using the yarn needle, sew the strap onto the side of the hat. I sewed the side of two of the hdcs from the straps to the top of two dcs on the hat. To determine where to sew, lay the hat flat and place the mask along the brim of the hat. Find the rows of the straps that align with the sides of the hat and sew about 1-2 rows further back on the straps. This leaves a little bit of slack in the front of the mask, which will be tightened as the straps are tied in the back.
