This pattern will allow you to try out the style of heel / gusset used in, for instance Show-off Stranded Socks. With this heel: ?The pattern stitch from the sock leg continues to the bottom of the leg There is no heel flap The gusset is integrated with the leg The heel is turned as though there were a heel flap. No picking up of stitches is required, which is pleasant for these very small socks.
Textured Integrated Gusset Mini-Sock
Sand Stitch (multiple of 2 stitches) Round S1: Knit. Round S2: K1, P1. Round S3: Knit. Round S4: P1, K1. Leg Cast on 20 stitches; divide for working on the round (using DPs, two circulars, or magic loop). Work 3 rounds in K1b, P1 ribbing (twisted ribbing.) Work in sand stitch until piece including ribbing 1.5 inches or as desired, ending with Round 4.
Gusset
Round G1: M1F, K10, M1B (future sole stitches); K10 (instep). Round G2: K1, (K1, P1) five times, K1; (K1, P1) 5 times. Round G3: M1F, K12, M1B; K10. Round G4: K2, (P1, K1) 5 times, K2; (P1, K1) 5 times. Round G5: M1F, K14, M1B; K10. Round G6: K3, (K1, P1) five times, K3; (K1, P1) 5 times. Round G7: M1F, K16, M1B; K10. Round G8: K4, (P1, K1) 5 times, K4. Turn (don't work instep stitches)
Turn Heel
Row H1: Purl 9, P2tog, P1, turn. (6 stitches remain unworked). Row H2: Slip 1, K1, SSK, K1, turn. (6 stitches remain unworked at this end, too.) Row H3: Slip 1, purl to one stitch before gap, P2tog, P1, turn. Row H4: Slip 1, knit to one stitch before gap, SSK, K1, turn. Repeat rows H3 and H4 two more times. Resume knitting in the round.
Foot
Work (P1, K1) 5 times across instep. Knit across sole stitches. Resume working in Sand stitch across 10 instep stitches, starting with Round S1. Continue knitting all sole stitches. Work until sock is 1.5 to 2 inches from tip of heel, or as desired.
Toe
Round T1: (K1, SSK, K4, K2tog, K1) twice. Round T2: Knit. Round T3: (K1, SSK, K2, K2tog, K1) twice. Round T4: Knit. Divide stitches between two needles, 6 stitches per needle. Slip the second and second last stitch on each needle over the respective end stitches (4 stitches left per needle). This helps lessen "ears" left when grafting. Graft (Kitchener) these four stitches together.
