The Dark One
Inspiration: Rumplestiltskin, from ABC's hit series Once Upon a Time, is exactly the trickster that would be expected, and yet he is so much more than that. He has a past that helps add tremendous depth to his character, and he has a love that helps bring out the good in him. This dual nature of good vs evil that he struggles with every day is represented in this highly textured sock pattern, which shows both of his sides

One Skein of Fingering weight yarn, approximately 400-450 yards or 100 grams. Sample sock knit in Sheepy Time Knits Panda Feet in the Exterminate Colorway. Work 12 rows of K2TBl, P3 ribbing and then start the leg pattern. There will be five repeats of the leg pattern around the whole sock, and it is advised that stitch markers are used to tell when one repeat begins and ends. For those of you that knit from Charts, there is a chart on the last page of the pattern. Heel Flap: The Heel flap is knit over the stitches on the back needle, after some rearranging. Flip the work so that you will be working the wrong side of the back needle. Row 1 (Wrong Side): (P1TBL, K1, P1TBL) transfer these three stitches to the front needle, work the next 33 stitches as follows K1 [P1TBL, K1] move the remaining three unworked stitches to the front needle and turn, getting ready to knit the right side. Row 2 (Right Side): P1, [K1TBL, P1] across, turn Row 3 (Wrong Side): K1, [P1TBL, K1] across, turn Repeat rows two and three until the heel flap measures 2 inches, getting ready to work a right side row. Heel Turn: Row 1: S1, K18, SSK, K1, turn Row 2: S1, P6, P2TOG, P1, turn Row 3: S1, K7, SSK, K1, turn Row 4: S1, P8, P2TOG, P1, turn Continue in this manner increasing the amount of stitches worked before each decrease by one and ensuring that the decreases fall on the gaps between stitches until all of the gaps have been closed and 19 stitches remain on the needle. Get ready to work the gusset. Gusset: Knit 9 stitches, place marker. This is now the start of the round Set Up Round 1: K 10, then begin to pick up 18 stitches along the heel flap, using the purl bumps on the edge for guides. Make sure that one of the 18 stitches you pick up closes the gap between the side of the sock and the front of the sock. On needle 1 work the first three stitches in twisted rib (K1TBL, P1, K1TBL), place marker, and then work the next 26 stitches in pattern, starting up the leg pattern where you left off before the gusset (either row 21 or 1 depending on where you left off), place marker. Work the last three stitches on the needle in twisted rib (K1TBL, P1, K1TBL). Pick up 18 more stitches along the right side of the sock, ensuring that the first stitch closes the gap between the side of the foot and the top of the foot. Knit to the end of the round. Divide the stitches so that one needle holds the sole stitches, and one needle holds the instep stitches Set Up Round 2: Knit until two stitches remain on the left needle, K2TOG. Continue instep in established pattern, SSK, Knit till end of round Round 1: Knit until 3 stitches remain on left needle, K2TOG, K1. Continue working instep in established pattern, K1, SSK, knit to end of round Round 2: Knit sole stitches in stockinette stitch, and continue knitting instep in pattern Repeat these two rounds until 33 sole stitches remain Before starting the foot one more sole stitch needs to be decreased so that the total number is 32 sole stitches, for a grand total of 64 stitches. This decrease can be done on either side of the foot, but it needs to be worked in the same nature as the gusset decreases. Foot: Continue the instep in pattern, and the sole stitches in stockinette stitch. Continue in this manner until the foot measures 2 inches less than the desired length, ending the foot pattern on either row 20 or 40. If the end of a repeat does not fall near 2 inches less than the desired length continue in stockinette stitch until the foot is the desired length. Toe: Knit to end of needle 2, this is now the beginning of the round. Decreases are worked as follows: k1, ssk, knit till 3 stitches remain on needle 1, k2tog, k2, ssk, knit till three stitches remain, k2tog, k1 Round 1: Decrease Round 2 & 3:Knit Round 4: Decrease Round 5 & 6:Knit Round 7: Decrease Round 8 & 9:Knit Round 10: Decrease Round 11: Knit Round 12: Decrease Round 13: Knit Round 14: Decrease Round 15: Knit Round 16: Decrease Round 17: Decrease Round 18: Decrease Round 19: Decrease (12 stitches remain per needle) Graft the stitches together and weave in ends using kitchener stitch or another appropriate method.
