An excursion into the world of short rows as I knit them:
There are various techniques for knitting short rows. I am here describing the one I use. The right side should look like regular knitting as far as possible. The most important thing is to avoid holes at the turning point of the short rows. Knit as far as the desired turning point (anywhere in the row). Turn work. Slip the YO resulting from the turn onto the right needle (hold with thumb or forefinger) and continue to knit, making sure to knit very tightly. YOs will then be treated like regular stitches. The next step depends on what the RS row should look like.
RS row:
For a knit stitch: k2tog = knit two stitches together: Insert needle into stitch and YO as if to knit and knit together. For a purl stitch: p2tog = purl two together: Insert needle into YO and following stitch as ifto purl and purl together.
WS row:
Stitch after YO should look like a purl stitch in RS row: ssk = slip, slip, knit: Insert needle into YO as if to knit, slip onto right needle, knit next stitch and pass slipped stitch over the knit stitch. Stitch after YO should look like a knit stitch in RS row: ssp = slip, slip, purl: Insert needle into YO as if to knit and slip onto right needle. Do the same for the next stitch. Slip both stitches back onto left needle. Insert right needle left to right through both stitches and slip back onto left needle. Purl both stitches together.
