Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials:

Brown yarn of choice (I used less than 2 oz) Green yarn of choice (I used about 3 oz) Scraps of red (just a few feet, really) Hook (size dependent on yarn, I used a size J hook and ww yarn)

Special stitches/notes:

V-stitch: (DC, ch 1, DC, ch 1) all in the same space (with brown) Magic loop, ch 2, dc 7 in loop. (Ch does NOT count as a dc for this step. Round 2: dc x 2 in every space around (14) Round 3: \*dc, dc x 2 around (21) Round 4: \*dc, dc, dc x 2 around (28) Round 5: \*dc, dc, dc, dc x2 around (35) Round 6: \*dc, dc, dc, dc, dc x2 around (42) Round 6: dc in every space around, back loop only (42) 9: dc in every space around, changing colors to green on the last stitch of round 9 (42) Round 10: ch 1, [sk 2 spaces, v-stitch] around, sl st into ch 1 at beg of round. (14 v-stitches made) Round 11: dc x 5 DOWN the post of the right side v stitch from the post below, ch 1, dc x5 UP the left side of the v-stitch. (Skip a v-stitch [optional: sl st into center of skipped v - stitch] . dc x5 down the right post, ch 1, dc x5 up the left post) 6 more times, skip last v stitch, sl st shut (see pic, last one taken) (7 scales made) Knotty Trick: Don't hesitate to turn your work sideways to work up and down the posts. To go down the post, turn it 90 degrees clockwise, to go up, turn it 180 degrees if you work right handed. If you work left handed, then flip it theoppositeway V-stitch round: sl st into top of right scale, sl st to get between the two halves (see pic) ch 3 (counts as a dc and a ch 1), dc into same space, ch 1 , v stitch in v-stitch of previous round, \*v stitch in center of scale from previous round, v stitch in v-stitch from previous round\* repeat around, sl st into ch 3 (14 v-stitches made) Tip: V-stitches should fall between full scales and between the two halves of the scale. (See pic) Don't forget about the last vstitch that's hiding behind the left side of the last scale, it needs a v-stitch, too. Scale round: sl st to get into center of v-stitch, dc x 5 down the right post, ch 1, DC x 5 up the left post, [skip a vstitch, DC x 5 down the right post of the v-stitch, ch 1, DC x 5 up the left post] repeat around, skipping the last vstitch, sl st shut (see pic - last one taken) Repeat alternating v-stitch round with scale round, ending on a scale round until desired height is reached. For example in picture, I have 7 rows of scales. veave in and out of v-stitches (behind scales but in front of v-stitches), pull tight and ti Copyright 2013 Lauren Madison, The Knotty Hooker
