Size:

Materials:

Of 6-strand "White Buffalo Wool", or other bulky weight yarn to give the same tension, allow: 3(4,4,5) - 8 oz balls main colour, 1 ball each of cream, brown, and black Needles size 6.00mm and 7.5 mm, crochet hook 5.0mm if making button-up style 3 stitch holders, stitch markers Zipper long enough to reach from bottom edge to neck ( approximately 18 or 19") - OR - 5 large buttons

Tension:

10 stitches and 14 rows to 4 inches using larger needles.

Back:

With main colour and 6 mm needles, cast on 47(49, 51, 53) stitches, work 10 rows in K1, P1 rib. Change to 7.5mm needles and stockinette stitch, work 4 rows. Follow Chart I for 5 rows, then work 11 rows stocking stitch in main colour. Knit 0(1, 2, 3), pm, and using a separate ball for each colour section, work Chart 2, pm, knit 0(1, 2, 3) for 25 rows. Continue plain with main colour for a further 31(35, 39, 43) rows. Cast off 16(17, 18, 19) stitches, place next 15 stitches on a holder, cast off remaining stitches.

Pocket Linings (make 2):

With 7.5 mm needles and main colour, cast on 12 stitches and work in stockinette stitch for 11 rows, break yarn and place stitches on a holder.

Left Front:

With main colour and 6.0mm needles, cast on 24(25, 26, 27) stitches and work 10 rows in K1, P1 rib, slipping first stitch of every wrong side row. Change to 7.5mm needles and stockinette stitch, work 4 rows, then follow Chart 3 for 5 rows. Continue in stocking stitch, work 3 rows with main colour, remembering to slip first stitch of wrong side rows as before. Next Row: Knit 6(7, 8, 9) stitches, slip next 12 stitches on a holder, knit 12 stitches of first pocket liner, knit remaining 6 stitches. Held stitches will be used later to finish the pocket top. Continue in stockinette stitch for a further 5 rows. Knit 5(6, 7, 8) stitches, place marker, then joining and breaking contrast colours as needed, follow Chart 4 (13 stitches), place marker, knit 6 stitches main colour. Continue until the end of the chart, break contrast yarn, removing markers on last row. Work a further 7(11, 15, 19) rows plain with main colour. Neck Shaping: Knit 1 row plain. On next (purl) row, cast off 3 stitches (don't slip first stitch any more). Decrease 1 stitch at neck edge on each purl row until you have 16(17, 18, 19) stitches remaining. Knit plain for a further 4 rows. Cast off. ) held stitches onto larger needle. With right side facing, purl 1 row. Cast off

Right Front:

Work as for left front, reversing all shapings and remembering to slip the first stitch of every right side row purlwise with yarn in front. Work chart 5, and place pocket linings as before. When working Chart 4, slip first stitch, knit 5 stitches, place marker, work pattern, place marker, knit 6(7, 8, 9) stitches. Wet block or steam pieces to size.

Back Collar:

Slip held stitches from back of neck onto needle. With smaller needles and right side facing, work in garter stitch (knit every row) as follows: Increase 1 stitch each end of row on 3rd row, then every following 4th row 6 times (29 stitches). Work 1 more row in garter stitch and cast off. Sew both shoulder seams at this point.

Front Collar:

With smaller needles and main colour, cast on 3 stitches and work as follows: Knit 2 rows. Next Row: Increase 1 stitch in first stitch, K1, increase 1 stitch in last stitch (5 stitches). Next Row: Slip 1, knit to end of row. Next Row: (increase row) Slip 1, increase 1 stitch in next stitch, knit to last 2 stitches, increase 1 stitch in next stitch, Knit 1 (7 stitches). Continue in garter stitch (knit every row) remembering to slip the first stitch of every row AND AT THE SAME TIME work an increase row every other row 3 times, then every following 4th row twice (17 stitches). Continue in garter stitch (knit every row) until collar measures about 7 inches from beginning, or suitable length to fit along neckline from bottom edge of back collar to beginning of front neck shaping, ending with right side facing for next row. Cast off.

Finishing:

Mark a point about 9(10, 11, 12) inches down from shoulder seam on each outside edge of work (4 points marked). With smaller needles, pick up approximately 50(50, 60, 60) stitches between markers - 25(30) on each side of shoulder seam. Cast off loosely to finish armhole edge. Repeat for second side. Sew side seams from bottom rib to markers. Pin cast off edge of front collar to side edge of back collar. Pin remainder of front collar evenly along neck edge to beginning of neck shaping. Sew into position. Repeat for other front collar. If using, insert zipper at center front, matching patterns carefully. For button loops, crochet a chain about 2" long for each button loop. Sew to edge of right front, spacing evenly from neck shaping to bottom edge, matching patterns carefully. Sew buttons to left front to correspond to loops.
