Size: This pattern is written for 5 sizes: XS (Small, Medium, Large, XL) Foot circumference: 7 (7.5,8,8.5, 9) inches 17.5 (19,20,21.5,23 cm) unstretched, after blocking. Yarn: Fingering-weight sock yarn that gives you proper gauge,350 - 400 yards; Sample Shown: Hazel Knits Piquant Lite [90% SUPERWASH Wool, 10% Nylon; 40Oyd per 110 gram skein]; color: Happy Hour: 1 skein. Needles: 1 set of US1(2.25 mm) 32" circular needles (magic loop),2 sets of 24" circulars or double pointed needles OR size to get gauge. Gauge: 32 sts/48 rows = 4" in Stockinette Stitch. Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle. Skill Level: Intermediate (knitting in the round, following a chart) NOTES: "Surrender Dorothy!" commanded the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard ofOz. Being a plucky girl from Kansas who already survived a massive tornado, Dorothy had no intention of surrendering. The main feature of these socks is the swirling tornado-like spiral across the top. It looks harder than it is,so go ahead and surrender to this project! Start Sock:
Cuff: CO 56 (60,64,68,72) sts and join to begin working in the round,being careful not to twist sts when joining. Gusset: (worked in the round) Set up round: Pick up and knit 14 (15,16,17,18) sts along edge of heel flap, pick up and k1 st in between heel flap and instep, pm, work next row of Sprial Chart pattern across instep (rnd 59), pm,pick up and k1 st in between instep and heel flap,pick up and 14 (15,16, 17,18) sts along other edge of heel flap. 74 (80, 86, 92, 98) sts. Rnd 1: K16 (18,20,22,24),p13 (14, 15, 16,17), k2tog, slm, work next row of Spiral Chart pattern, slm, ssk, p13 (14, 15, 16, 17). Rnd 2: Knit until marker, slm, work next row of Sprial Chart pattern, slm, k to end of rnd. Rnd 3: K to 3 sts before m, k2tog, k1, slm, work next row of Spiral Chart pattern,slm, k1, ssk,kto end of rnd. Rep rnds 2-3 until you have 56 (60,64,68,72) sts remaining.
Foot:
Set up rnd: Remove end of rnd marker. K to 1st m, slm, work next rnd of Spiral Chart pattern, slm This marker that you just slipped is your new end of rnd marker. Now rearrange sts on your needles s0 that first 28 (30,32,34,36) sts are the sole and the last 28 (30,32,34,36) sts (that you just worked) are the instep. Rnd 1: Knit across heel sts to marker, slm, work next row of Spiral Chart pattern, slm. (NOTE: When the Spiral Chart Pattern is complete after rnd 86, knit across all sts on the instep) Repeat rnd 1 until foot of sock measures 1.25 (1.5, 1.75,2,2)" less than desired final length. Toe: Rnd 1: [K1, ssk, k to 3 sts before m, k2tog, k1, slm] twice. Rnd 2: Knit to end, slipping markers as you come to them Rep rnds 1-2 until 24 sts remain (12 on each needle if you're using 2 circulars or magic loop) Remove markers,break yarn, leaving long enough strand to graft toe using Kitchener stitch.
