Amaterasu
When I think of fall returning to New Orleans it's with great excitement that I realize I can start wearing my hand knit socks with vigor again. After a summer full of flip flops and sandals my feet long for the feel of litle purl bumps. September and October can still be pretty hot though and not every day is going to be wool worthy. That's when I spotted this new Panda Silk yarn at my lys. One touch and I surrendered. I knew I had to wrap my tootsies in some of this stuff. The warm oranges and yellows had me thinking of beautiful sunsets. Amaterasu (wiki link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaterasu) is the Japenese mythological sun goddess.

SIZING NOTES
This lace pattern is pretty stretchy and the yarn has lots of drape so I worked these up on size O needles to give the sock a little more body and also because I found the Panda Silk to be on the thin side. If you substitute sock yarns I would look for something on thinner side to match the gauge of the Panda Silk. I also worked a twisted rib cuff to help hold the leg of the sock up and help keep it from falling down. If you find the cuff to be working up to too tight you might want to work the cuff on a larger needle size and then go back down a needle size for the lace pattern depending on your fitting preference.

PATTERN NOTES
This pattern can be worked on dpn's or circular needle(s). It may be necessary to shift a stitch between needles while working the spiraling sun ray lace pattern to work a k2tog or ssk if it falls between two needles. When it is time to split the stitches for the heel flap and the instep be sure to count your number of stitches and re-arrange as needed.

Place marker, split ring marker or safety pin here to mark new beg of round. Pick up and $\textrm{k}1$ st between top of heel flap and held instep sts and 1 st in each slipped st along edge of heel flap, a total of 17 stitches. K across 20 heel stitches. Pick up and $\textrm{k}1$ st in each slipped st along second edge of heel flap and 1 st between top of heel flap and held instep stitches, 17 stitches will be picked up along this edge as well, total of 54 foot stitches (these sts will be on designated needle 1 whether working with dpn's or circulars). Right Foot
Work the same as left foot except replace Left leg and instep charts with Right leg and instep charts. This will create a mirror image effect between the two socks. FINISHING Weave in all ends.
