heel turn:

work in “instep flower pattern" across the instep sts, then put the 31 (35) instep sts on hold, they will be continued later. the heel turn is worked back and forth over the 54 (61) sole stitches: row 1 (RS): k36(41), kfb, kl, w&t row 2 (WS): p21(24), pfb, pl, w&t row 3 (RS): k19(22), kfb, kl, w&t row 4 (WS): p17(20), pfb, pl, w&t row 5 (RS): k15(18), kfb, kl, w&t row 6 (WS): p13(16), pfb, pl, w&t row 7 (RS): k11(14), kfb, kl, w&t row 8 (WS): p9(12), pfb, pl, w&t row 9 (RS): k7(10), kfb, kl, w&t row 10 (WS): p5(8), pfb, pl, w&t = > 64 (71) sts on heel needles next round (Rs): your starting point after round 10 of heel turn is somewhere in the middle of the heel. With outside (RS) of sock side facing you, you work across the heel stitches on your left needle(s), while knitting each wrap together with the stitch it wraps (i.e. insert tip of one needle into the wrap at the base of the stitch, lift wrap onto the needle, then knit it together with the wrapped stitch) when you reach the instep, work across all instep sts in “instep flower pattern” as established. Now you are at the beginning of the heel with all 64/71 heel stitches waiting on your left needle(s) to be worked next.

heel flap:

the heel flap is worked back and forth over the 64 (71) heel stitches :

smaller size only:

row 1 (RS): k31 while knitting each wrap together with the stitch it wraps, k2tog, k14, ssk, turn larger size only: row 1 (RS): k52 while knitting each wrap together with the stitch it wraps, ssk, turn row 2 (WS): sl yf, p29(33), p2tog, turn row 3 (RS): [sl yb, k1] 15(17) times, ssk, turn repeat row 2 and 3 until all side sts have been worked, end having worked row 2.

smaller size only:

knit across all heel sts until you reach the last heel st, k2tog it together with the first instep stitch (this k2tog counts toward the front-of-leg/instep stitches), then work in pattern across the instep sts and ssk the last one together with the first heel stitch (this ssk stitch now counts towards the new back-of-leg.) continueforbothsizes: now you have 60(70) sts on your needle and you start working in the round again for the leg. leg: until you reach the next row 1 or 11 of the patter: knit across all of the back of the leg ("heel stitches") while working the front of the leg ("instep stitches") in instep flower pattern as established. then start working flower pattern all around the leg (start with row 1 or row 11 of leg flower pattern, depending on which row you just reached at the instep):

cuff:

work 11 (14) rounds of [p1, k1] ribbing

cast off:

use this stretchy lace-cast-off method and don't work too loosely lest the edge be wide and floppy: work 2 sts, maintaining rib pattern (i.e. knit the knits or purl the purls). \*bring yarn to back of work, slip the 2 sts back onto left needle and k2together through the back loops. knit next stitch in rib pattern. repeat from \* until all stitches have been cast off. finishing: break yarn, weave in all ends. then knit a second sock and enjoy!

about this pattern:

"Longing for spring" (,Sehnsucht nach dem Frihling", KV 596, Vienna, 14 January 1791) is a lovely litle song composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during the last winter of his life. Come, dear May, and make Komm, lieber Mai, und mache the trees green again, Die Baume wieder grin, and let the little violets Und lafs mir an dem Bache bloom for me by the brook! Die kleinen Veilchen blihn! In the pattern of these feminine socks, you can see little flowers growing by the brook. (Use a solid or semi-solid yarn rather than a variegated, so you'll really see them blossom.) Whether you knit the socks during winter looking forward to the next season or while sitting amidst blooming meadows - I hope you enjoy the time!
