The brim of the cap may be folded down to cover the ears, and the scarf is long enough to wrap twice around the neck, or to fold in half and tuck the scarf ends through the resulting loop, as shown above. are included to work one adult cap and scarf set from a single 7-ounce skein of yarr The instructions are easy enough for beginning crocheters, and the design may be customized with one wide stripe (attractive with a multicolored yarn) or two narrow ones. You can also choose among four sizes for the cap and two sizes for the scarf.
Project Notes
All the crochet terms used in these patterns are defined in a Glossary, part of the Appendix at the end of this document. The patterns are written using U. S. crochet terminology. The Appendix also contains a list of translations between the U.S. terminology used in these patterns and international crochet terminology. The 2- or 3-stitch chains at the beginning of each row or round count throughout as one half double crochet or one double crochet, respectively. This project, with a large-size cap and an adult-size scarf, takes approximately 6 ounces of color A (the main color) and 1 ounce of color B (the trim color). To work this project in a single color, follow the pattern steps for "one wide stripe" for both the cap and the scarf, but ignore the instructions to switch from color A to color B and back again. If you wish to work this project with a single 7-oz skein of yarn, make the cap first, using the instructions above for a single color, then make the scarf in the same manner. If you run out of yarn before the scarf reaches its full length, unravel the last full row of dc and rework it in hdc, then finish off.

Cap Notes
The cap is worked in the round, so that the right side (outside of cap) is always facing you as you crochet. However, the instructions call for turning the piece once, at the transition from the Cap Body to the Cap Brim, so that the right side of the brim will face outward after the brim is turned up. As you complete working each round, slip stitch into the top stitch of the beginning chain before continuing on to the next round. This pattern allows for four cap sizes: Small (Child's), Medium, Large, and Extra Large.
Cap Materials
Worsted weight yarn: Color A: 2 oz. Color B: % oz. Crochet hook, size H (5.0 mm) or size needed for gauge: With worsted weight yarn, work through round 4 of the Cap Top. The disk should be 4% inches in diameter; use a larger or smaller hook to achieve this size. Yarn needle to finish off the piece by weaving in all the loose ends of yarn.
Cap Top
To begin: Create Adjustable Base Loops by wrapping color A completely around your left forefinger twice, from left to right, holding the short yarn end on the right between your thumb and middle finger. Insert hook from the right and pull through a loop from the leftmost wrapped strand (the end attached to the skein of yarn). Remove the Adjustable Base Loops intact from your forefinger and proceed to round 1. Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as the 1st dc now and throughout), dc 11 into the hole in the center of the two Adjustable Base Loops, leaving the short yarn end free: 12 dc. Sl st the last dc to the first dc (the top of the ch-3) now and at the end of every round throughout. If necessary, push the short yarn end through the central hole of the Adjustable Base Loops so that it points away from you, to mark the wrong side (inside) of the cap. Then tug on the short yarn end to tighten the Adjustable Base Loops and close the hole completely. As you work the rounds, be sure this short end continues to face away from you, until you are instructed to turn the piece for the Cap Brim. Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each dc around: 24 dc. Rnd 3: Ch 3, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc) around, 2 dc in last dc: 36 dc. nd 4: Ch 3, dc in next dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc) around, 2 dc in last dc: 48 ( Rnd 5: Choose one: For a Small (Child's) size cap: t 6 dc (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 7 dc) around, 2 dc in last dc: 54 dc. Skip to Cap Bod For a Medium size cap: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc) around, 2 dc in last dc: 60 dc. Skip to Cap Body. For a Large or Extra Large size cap: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc) around, 2 dc in last dc: 60 dc. Proceed to Rnd 6. Rnd 6: Choose one: For a Large size cap: Ch 3, dc in next 8 dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 9 dc) around, 2 dc in last dc: 66 dc. Skip to Cap Body. For an Extra Large size cap: (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc) around, 2 dc in last dc: 72 dc. Proceed to Cap Body
Cap Body
Rnd 1: Continuing with color A, ch 3, dc in next dc around: 54/60/66/72 dc. Place a scrap of contrasting yarn around the beginning chain to mark Round 1 of the Cap Body. Rnds 2-6: Ch 3, dc in next dc around: 54/60/66/72 dc. For a Small (Child's) size cap: Skip to Cap Brim. Rnds 7-8: Repeat rnd 2: 60/66/72 dc. Proceed to Cap Brim.
Cap Brim
Rnd 1: Turn piece so wrong side (inside of cap) faces you. Still using color A, ch 2, hdc into back loop only of each dc around: 54/60/66/72 hdc.
For a Small (Child's) size cap:
Work rows 2-4 of the Cap Brim as instructed below, except ch 2 instead of ch 3 to start each round, and work eachround inhdcinsteadofdc. Rnd 2: Switch to color B, ch 3, dc in each hdc around: 54/60/66/72 dc. Folding the brim up along the ridge made in round 1 makes the next rounds easier to work. For one wide stripe: Rnds 3-4: Ch 3, dc in each dc around: 54/60/66/72 dc. Skip to round 5. For two narrow stripes: Rnd 3: Switch to color A, ch 2, dc in each dc around: 54/60/66/72 dc. Rnd 4: Switch to color B, ch 3, dc in each dc around: 54/60/66/72 dc. Continue to round 5. Rnd 5: Switch to color A, ch 2, hdc in each dc around: 54/60/66/72 hdc. Finish off cap, being sure to weave in the yarn end at the inside top of the cap. Turn brim up along the ridge made in round 1, if not already done.

Scarf Notes
The scarf is worked in rows and the piece is turned between every row. Work the Base Chain and the first row of half double crochet very loosely, if they tend to be tighter and thus narrower than the rest of the rows. If necessary, switch to a slightly larger crochet hook (e.g., size K, 6.5 mm) to work the Base Chain plus the first row of hdc. This pattern allows for two scarf sizes: Child's (approximately 5 x 50 inches) and Adult (approximately 6 x 60 inches). The number of rows in the Scarf Body is approximate; adjust the number according to the instructions for measuring the length of the scarf based upon the desired size, Child's or Adult. If you wish to make a narrower or wider scarf, count the number of double crochets you need for the desired width in the yarn you will use, then calculate the length of the Base Chain by adding one to that number. (If you care about the math: subtract 1 for the starting stitch that is replaced by chain stitches, then add 2 for the number of chain stitches to make up an initial half double crochet.)
Scarf Materials
Worsted weight yarn: Color A: 4 oz for Adult size, 3 oz for Child's size. Color B: % oz. Crochet hook, size J (6.0 mm) or size needed for gauge: With worsted weight yarn and following instructions for the Adult size, work through row 3 of the Scarf Beginning Section. The piece should measure approximately 5% to 6 inches wide and 1% inches long; if necessary, use a different size hook to achieve these dimensions. Yarn needle to finish off the piece by weaving in all the loose ends of yarn.

Glossary
The following terms and abbreviations are used in these patterns: Base chain the line of chain stitches that provide a foundation for a piece worked in rows. The first row is worked into the base chain. BLO back loops only. Of the two strands at the top of the double crochet (dc) you will work into next, insert the crochet hook under the one farthest from you. ith one loop on the hook, YO and pull the resulting loop through the one on the hoc Color A the main background color of the piece. Color B the color of the decorative trim (e.g. stripes) on the piece. Dc double crochet(s); with one loop on the hook, YO, insert the hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on the hook, then YO again and pull through the final two loops on the hook. FLO front loops only. Of the two strands at the top of the double crochet (dc) you will work into next, insert the crochet hook under the one nearest to you. Hdc half double crochet(s); with one loop on the hook, YO, insert the hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop, YO and pull through all three loops on the hook. Mm millimeter; used to measure crochet hooks. Rnd round; one complete circuit of stitches on a piece (such as the cap) that is worked in the round. Usually you slip stitch to the top of the chain at the beginning of the round. No turn is necessary at the end of the round. Row; one complete line of stitches on a piece (such as the scarf) worked in rows. You must turn the piece after each row to work on the next row. Always turn the piece in the same direction. Sl st slip stitch; insert the hook into the next stitch, YO and pull up a loop, pull that loop through the one on the hook. ts stitch, stitches; refers to any type of stitch (chain, slip stitch, double crochet, etc.). YO yarn over; always place the strand(s) of yarn from back to front over the hook before continuing the stitch. The number of yarn overs worked at the beginning of a double crochet or larger stitch determines the length of the completed stitch.
