Buffalo Knot Belt
Simple LoveKnot StitchVariation Pattern #46-N91009L Clickhere to see the online photo albumforthisdesign This quick pattern for the hippie in (most) all of us uses a beefier Love Knot variation that I developed (although surely someone else has before me). Crocheting these "Buffalo Knots" with two strands of medium weight cotton yarn held together gives them even more heft than they usually have. Whether or not you already know how make Love Knots (also known as Lover's Knot, Solomon's Knot, Knot Stitch), this Buffalo version is a pleasure to make, and a handy addition to a crocheter's toolbox.

Skill Level: Easy Intermediate. Love Knots are considered by some crocheters to be an Intermediate-level stitch because they require a different kind of hand-eye coordination to make each stitch evenly. Please don't be intimidated by this; it's a fun stitch to know! Resist the temptation to expect perfect Buffalo Knots for this folksy boho belt and you'll be fine. Pattern is written without stitch abbreviations for practicing pattern readers. UK and Australian equivalents to American measurements, yarn weights, and stitch terms are provided in brackets. After using this pattern you will know (if you didn't already): · How to make a classic Love Knot, plus my "Buffalo" variation. · How to choose a yarn or thread wisely so that these knot stitches look their best.
Finished Dimensions

Materials

Color #190 Painted Desert was used for this project. Yarn Substitution tips: The closest substitute is Lily's Sugar 'n Cream Ombres (100% Cotton, 95yds/86m per 2oz/56.7g ball); or a standard #4 Medium Weight yarn (a.k.a. Worsted, Aran, Afghan Weight) that's not too slippery or silky is best, so that the Buffalo Knots don't loosen with time. Optional: Medium to Large wood beads, 0.5"-1.25" {1.5mm-3.25mm), approximately 10.

Special Stitches
How to crochet the classic Love Knot: A fun fact about Love Knots is that you do not need to start with a foundation chain. Practice with one strand of project yarn and an H/8/5mm crochet hook. Begin by making the usual slip knot in your yarn and place the loop on your hook. Chain 1, pull the new loop on your hook to 1 inch (2.5 cm} long, yarn over and pull yarn through the loop: one long chain stitch made. Notice that all chain stitches, including long ones, have 3 strands. Two of them are considered the top loops of a chain stitch, and the 3rd strand forms the bottom "bump" of a chain stitch. Insert your hook under that 3rd strand, yarn over, pull loop through: 2 loops on hook. Yarn over, pull yarn through both loops on hook (as if to complete a single crochet): 1 classic Love Knot made.
The last step formo the “knot" part. I like to make mine tight.
To make more Love Knots: \*Pull up loop on hook to make it approximately as long as the Love Knot you just completed. Yarn over, pullthrough the loop to make a long chain stitch. Insert hook under the bottom 3rd strand of the long chain stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook. Repeat from \* to practice until you're comfortable. If you like, fasten off and save your work as a reference swatch. How to crochet the Buffalo Knot variation: Begin the same as for regular Love Knots: place slip knot on hook, chain 1, pull up loop on hook to 1 inch (approx. 2.5 cm) long. Now \*yarn over, insert hook under 3rd bottom loop of page 4 gf5 long chain stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook); yarn over, pull through all loops on hook: 1 Buffalo Knot made. (Wbat you juot did id complete the Love Knot with a balf Double crochet stitch instead of a single crochet.) To continue, pull up the loop on hook to the same length, and repeat from \*. Practice a few of these before beginning pattern.

Begin Buffalo Knot Belt
Using K/10.5/6.5mm hook and both ends of the same ball of yarn held together, make a slip knot leaving 48" {122 cm} ends and place on crochet hook. Step 1: Chain 1. Make Buffalo Knots (see Special Stitches, above) until Belt is 32" ↓81 cm} long, for a size Small before adding beads to ends, or desired length. Fasten off leaving 48" {122 cm} ends. Step 2: For beads with large holes, chain approximately 40 with one yarn end and smaller crochet hook. \*String bead onto chain strand by using a small crochet hook to pull chain through bead hole. Tie an overhand knot close to bead and repeat from \*. For beads with smaller holes, you may need to omit chain stitches and string bead directly onto yarn end and tie an overhand knot after each bead added this way. Repeat for all yarn ends. Trim ends.
