Peachy Green Purse

Materials:
RH Designer Sport Yarn - Main Color (MC) (I used Celedon) - 1 skein RH Designer Sport Yarn - Contract Color (CC) (I actually used a remnant of Caron Simply Soft - Persimmon) approx. 1 oz. Hook size: H (5mm) NOTE: This pattern has not been tested. Please contact me if there are any problems found! I'd rather be told I messed up than have others struggle with a pattern that doesn't make sense. hoyster@ surfbest.net Special Stitches: Popcorn St: YO, insert hook in next st, YO, pull up a loop, YO pull through 2 loops on hook. \*YO, insert hook in same st, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops on hook\*. Repeat from \* to \* 2 more times. YO, pull through all 5 loops on hook. ESC: Extended Single Crochet. Just like a regular single crochet, except you insert a "chain" in the middle. Insert hook into next st, YO, pull up a loop. YO, pull through ONE loop on hook (that's your “chain). YO, pull through both loops on hook.
Pattern Notes:
a. The entire pattern is done in Rounds, started by crocheting up one side then down the other side of a single chain. b. All Popcorn Stitch rows are done with the wrong side (WS) facing you. This causes the popcorns to puff out on the outside (RS) of the purse. c. Popcorn Stitches are done not into a particular stitch, but between stitches, generally between the 2 dc of the previous popcorn round. This creates a “tight" pattern, preventing large holes in the body of your purse. d.All contrast color rows are done with the right side (RS) facing. e. I chose not to tie off when I changed colors, instead leaving the unused yarn connected and picking it back up where I left it off. Be careful when doing this that your loose end and the loop you will continue from are on the INSIDE of the purse as you work in the other color. This prevents there from being obvious messy pick-ups when you return to the loose color. 十When picking up the CC, I described how I did it as a “surface sl st" across the 2 intervening rounds of MC - in other words, on the WS, insert hook through yarn in first MC-intervening round (where the CC will not show through to the RS), YO, pull up a loop, pull through single loop on hook. Repeat at least once more in the second intervening round, to be sure CC is not flopping loose on the inside of the purse, working your way up over the MC rounds to where you need to begin the next round. g. The contrast color (CC) rows in the body of the purse are very subtle - they will be barely visible. Be sure to pick a color that will pop out in contrast to the main color. Foundation: MC: Ch 31 Round 1: sc in second ch from hook, sc in each stitch to next to last ch. 3 sc in last ch. Rotate row and sc back down the opposite side of each sc until you reach the beginning again. 2 more sc in first ch (for a total of 3 counting the very first of the round. join with sl st. ch 3 and turn. (Note, you are working on the WS of the purse for all popcorn rows. this makes the popcorns “pop” out on the RS. Round 2: (WS) dc in same st as ch 3, \*popcorn st in next st, dc in next 2 st\* repeat from \* to \* until reach beginning again, ending with popcorn, dc. Join with sl st to first dc (NOT the turning chain..turning chain should be on the inside of the purse. ch 3, DO NOTTURN. Round 3: (WS) popcorn st in space between 2 dc of previous round (i.e., you will popcorn OVER the turning chain you just created). \*Skip 1 st (the one “under" the popcorn you just created) dc in next 2 st, popcorn in space between next 2 sts\*, Repeat from \* to \* until you reach the beginning of the round. End with dc in last 2 sts, sl st to beginning popcorn. leave off MC but do not FO. TURN. Attach CC. Note: be careful that the loose end and remaining loop of CC stays on the INSIDE of the purse, so that when you pick it up later you can't see it from the outside of the purse. Round 4: (RS) with CC, sc in each st around. sl st to first sc. leave off CC, but do not FO. TURN. pick back up MC. Round 5 - (WS) just like Round 2, making the popcorns in between the 2 dc of round 3 (i.e., you're doing the popcorn OVER the CC row, and in between stitches of the previous MC round). dc's are done into the CC row. Round 6: (WS) repeat round 3. leave off MC, pick up CC. TURN. Round 7: (RS) with CC, surface sl st across 2 rounds of MC, sl st in last st of round 6; ch 1, sc in next st and each st around, joining with sl st to first sc. Rounds 8 through 19: Repeat Rounds 5-7. at end of Round 19, DO NOT TURN. Finish off CC. Pick up MC but continue to work OnRS. 0 - 22: (RS) sc in each st around. Join with sl st to first sc. ch 1, do not turn. Round 23. (RS) sc in next 7, ch 40 (create handle), skip 20 sts, sc in next 13 sts, ch 40 (create other handle), skip 20 sts, sc in next 7. sl st to first sc. ch 1, do not turn. Round 24. (RS) sc in each sc up to handle. \*sc in first 10 chains of handle. (2 sc in next ch, sc in next ch) 10 times. sc in the rest of the chs\*. sc in each sc to next handle. repeat from \* to \* over other handle. sc in ea st the end of the round. join w sl st to first sc. ch 1, do not turn. Round 25: (RS) sc in ea sc of top of purse, and in first 15 sc of handle. esc (SEE SPECIAL STITCHES) in next 20 sc, sc in last 15 sc of handle. sc in ea sc to next handle. repeat from \* to \* in opposite handle. sc in each st to end. join with sl st to beginning sc. ch 1, do not turn. Round 26: Repeat round 25. FO. Weave in all ends. TRIM: ( do on each handle) Attach CC to inside of handle. SC all the way around the inside of the handle. at the corners, do 3scTOG to join the top of the purse securely to the handle. join with sl st to beginning sc. FO. Weave in last few ends from Trim.
