Bamboo Stitch Baby Bonnet

Knitting pattern by Caryn Prouty of 3:23 Knits. This little baby bonnet is deeply textured, chunky and squishy, knit in a very easy and fun stitch that can be worn reversed for a totally different look. Finished off with plain or braided ties, this bonnet is sure to look great on boys and girls alike!
MATERIALS
Yarn
Less than one skein of Chunky or Bulky weight such as - Malabrigo Chunky (100g/104 yd) (pictured in orchid) - Knit Picks Biggo (100g/110yd)
Needles
US 9 (5.5mm) straight or (circular) needles to knit flat US 10.5 (6.5mm) straight or (circular) needles to knit flat US 10.5 (6.5mm) DPNs to knit in the round Other Notions Tapestry Needle, scissors. Sizing. Newborn
Gauge
Stockinette Stitch: 6 sts = 2" with US 10.5 Bamboo Stitch: 8 sts = 2" with US 10.5 Abbreviations
Notes
- This piece is worked flat (back and forth) until you reach the crown. Then you'll join in the round for decreasing. - I keep the bamboo stitch intact while decreasing to preserve the look, and also stay consistent with the gauge but this can be a bit fumbly.I'm always happy to answer any questions.
Body
Using US 9's, CO 42 (50, 54, 58) sts using your favorite method for ribbing (l prefer long tail "in pattern," so for this bonnet I alternate 2 knit sts, and 2 purl sts. If you're unfamiliar with this method, please see links at the end of this pattern. Row 1 (WS): P2, \*k2, p2\* Repeat from \* to \* until end. Row 2: K2, \*p2, k2\* Repeat from \* to \* until end. Row 3: Repeat row 1. Change to US 10.5 needles Row 4: \*yo, k2, pass yo over k2\* Repeat from \* to \* until end. Row 5: Purl all Rows 6-13: Repeat rows 4 & 5 four (five, six, seven) more times. Row 14: Repeat row 4. Bonnet should measure \~3.5" from CO edge. If it does not, add a repeat of row 4 & 5 until reaches this measurement.
Crown
Divide sts onto 3 DPNs (14 on each). Join in the round and work crown as follows: Round 1: Knit all. Round 2: \*[yo, k2, pass yo over k2] 5x, yo, k2tog, k2tog, pass yo over these 2 k2tog's. Repeat from \* to the end. (36 sts) Round 3: Knit all. Round 4: \*[yo, k2, pass yo over k2] 4x, yo, k2tog, k2tog, pass yo over these 2 k2tog's\* Repeat from \* to the end. (30 sts) Round 5: Knit all. Round 6: \*yo, k2, pass yo over k2, [yo, k2tog, k2tog, pass yo over these 2 k2tog's] 2x.\* Repeat from \* to the end. (18 sts) Round 7: K2tog around. (9 sts) Cut yarn with 6" tail and thread through these 9 sts, thread to inside of bonnet and fasten off, weave in ends. TIES Plain ties: Cut 2 strands 38" each. Fold strands in half and attach one to each corner of bonnet. (Use a darning needle or crochet hook to pull the folded end through the corner, send the ties through the loop formed, pull taught). Braided ties: Cut 6 strands 42" each. Attach 3 strands to each corner (as described above), and braid.
