Clara Doll
An original design for dolls by Amber Bertram Little girls love matching tops for their dolls too!

This is the doll's version of the Clara top and can be made with yarn in either 4ply/fingering or 8ply/DK to match either Clara pattern. Size: Sized to suit approx 23cm/9" chest doll Yarn Requirements: 8ply/DK or 4ply/fingering yarn - Shown in Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 8ply in ‘Brick Red' Approx60m/65yds Gauge: 22sts x 30rows on size 6/4.00mm needles in 8ply/DK 28sts x 36rows on size 3/3.25mm needles in 4ply/fingering over 10cm/4" in stocking stitch Notions: US size 3/3.25mm 30cm/12" circular needle (4ply/fingering version only) US size 6/4.00mm 30cm/12" circular needle (both versions) US size 8/5.00mm 30cm/12" circular needle (8ply/DK version only) Wasteyarn Darning needle (to sew in ends) Matching ribbon
Abbreviations:
k - knit p - purl st(s) - stitch(es) sl - slip stitch pm - place marker sm - slip marker SoR - Start of Round marker m1 - make one (with left needle, from in front, pick up the leg between the needles and knit into the back) m1R - make one right (with left needle, from behind, pick up the leg between the needles and knit into the front) k2tog - knit two together (knit two stitches together as one) k3tog - knit three together (knit three stitches together as one) ssk - slip, slip, knit (slip two stitches, one at a time, knitwise, place back onto left needle and knit into the back of both stitches together) PCO - provisional cast on
Provisional Cast On:
A couple of links to various provisional cast on techniques - Crochet Cast On (on the side bar, scroll down a bit for PCO tutorial) Invisible Provisional Cast On Or, using waste yarn cast on like normal and knit a row before changing to project yarn. The bodice starts with a provisional cast on and is worked in rows from the mid-back upwards, over each shoulder, then down the front until joined at the underarm to be worked in rounds.
Back
Using size 6/4.00mm size 3/3.25mm circ needle and waste yarn, PC0 24 31sts Continue with working yarn. When slipping stitches on a right side/knit row, hold the yarn at the back of the work (in the knit position). When slipping stitches on a wrong side/purl row, hold the yarn at the front of the work (in the purl position) - regardless of whether a knit or purl stitch follows. All stitches are slipped purlwise. Row 1: p to end Row 2: sl2, k2tog, k to last 4sts, ssk, k2 Row 3: sl2, p to end Repeat these two rows 0 1 more time. Total Sts: 22 27 Next Row: sl2, k to end Next Row: sl2, p to end Repeat these two rows 7 8 more times. Next Row: sl2, k to end Next Row: sl2, k to last 2sts, p2 Next Row: sl2, k to end
Shoulder Straps
Next Row: (WS) sl2, k4 5, TURN Continue on these 6 7sts. Row 1: sl2, k to end Row 2: sl2, p to end Repeat these two rows 12 16 more times. Break off yarn and rejoin to work at base of strap. Next Row: With wrong side of work facing, cast off 10 13sts knitwise, k to last 2sts, p2. Repeat rows 1 & 2 for second strap as before.
Front
Next Row: sl2, k across strap sts, (turn work to cast on) cast on 12 15sts, (turn work back again) k across the other strap. Total sts: 22 27sts Row 1: sl2, k to last 2sts, p2 Row 2: sl2, k to end Repeat row 1. Row 4: sl2, k to end Row 5: sl2, p to end Repeat rows 4 & 5 five more times. Next Row: sl2, k1, m1, k to last 3sts, m1R, k3 Next Row: sl2, p to end. Repeat these two rows 0 1 more time. Total sts: 24 31sts Join to work in the round: Round 1: sl2, k to end, cast on 2 3sts, pm (SoR), remove waste yarn from PCO and place sts onto LH needle and knit across, cast on 2 3sts, knit across front to SoR marker. Total sts: 52 68sts Knit two rounds.
Eyelet Panel
Round 1: p to end Round 2: k to end Round 3: p to end Round 4: (yo, k2tog)repeat to end. Repeat rounds 2 & 3 two more times. If preferred, round 4 (the eyelet round) can be omitted and rounds 2 & 3 repeated just one more time. This will make a plain garter stitch border.
Body
Change to size 8/5.00mm size 6/4.00mm needles Increase Round: k10 14, kfab x6, k20 28, kfab x6, k to end Total sts: 80 96sts Work the 12 rounds of starting lace pattern. Work rounds 1-6 1-12 of main lace pattern. Work the 4 rounds of the corresponding end lace pattern. Knit 1 more round.

Hem
Garter Hem Option: Round 1: p to end Round 2: K to end Cast off loosely purlwise (use a needle a size or two bigger).
I-Cord Bindoff Option:
Cast on 3sts onto LH needle. Row 1: k2, ssk (1st from i-cord, 1st from garment), sl 3sts (just worked) to LH needle. Repeat row 1 around.
Finishing
Weave in all ends and block gently, pining out lace hem points if required Thread ribbon through eyelets. Put top on doll and go play!
