HALF & HALF TABARD

Finished size: approx. 34" long x 21" wide (to fit 36" chest) NOTE: Sample designed for 36" chest. If wider garment is desired, purchase additional yarn. Materials: Worsted-weight handpaint or multicolor wool or wool-blend yarn (sample shown in Mountain Colors 'Alpaca Blend"): 500 yds. Color A 500 yds. Color B 200 yds. contrast color for seams and edging Size I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge Tapestry needle Gauge: 12 dc & 6 rows = 4" with size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook Stitches/Terms: beginning (beg), chain (ch), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), repeat (rep), slip stitch (sl st), space (sp), stitch (st) Rectangle (make 4 total - 2 in Color A, 2 in Color B) Row 1: Chain 103, dc in 4th ch from hook and ea ch across (101 dc) Row 2: Ch 3, turn, dc in first 2 dc, \*ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, rep from \* across, ending with dc in ea of last 3 dc (48 sps) Row 3: Ch 3, turn, dc in ea dc and sp across (101 dc) Row 4: Ch 3, turn, dc in first 3 dc, \*ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, rep from \* across, ending dc in ea of last 4 dc (47 sps) Row 5: Ch 3, turn, dc in ea dc and sp across (101 dc) Repeat Rows 2-5 for 10" (total of 15 rows) or for desired width of piece (half of total width desired for front or back.) Fasten off. Edging: Attach contrast color to one side of rectangle, ch 1, sc evenly around entire rectangle, placing one sc in ea dc on long sides, and 2 sc along sides of dc stitches on short sides of piece. Join with sl st and fasten off. Repeat for 3 more rectangles. Center front seam: Hold one Color A rectangle wrong sides together with one Color B rectangle. Attach contrast color with slip stitch through back loops only of dc stitches, approx. 10" down from top edge. Slip stitch through back loop of ea dc stitch on both pieces until you reach the lower edge of piece. Fasten off and weave in ends. Center back seam: Repeat instructions for center front seam, but begin back seam approx. 6" down from top edge of piece. Shoulder seams: Hold front wrong sides together with back at shoulder, attach contrast yarn, slip stitch across shoulder seam, this time working through both loops of dc stitches for stability. Repeat for second shoulder seam. Finishing: With contrast yarn, work 1 round slip stitch all around neck opening and all around outside edges of serape. Fasten off and weave in all ends. If necessary and appropriate for your choice of yarn, consult care instructions on ball band and block serape lightly by laying it flat on thick towels, then cover with damp towels and leave to dry. and Side Ties (optional): If desired, chain ties can be made to hold front and back pieces together at sides. With contrast yarn, chain 100, fasten off and tie ends in knots, burying yarn tails in the knots. Thread ties through spaces at desired points on each side of serape and tie in a bow.
