Yarn: a total of at least 150g (or 200 metres) of 4 ply, DK, aran, and chunky yarns. Use solid colours, or variegated, multi-coloured, or hand painted yarns. Use any fibre. Scarf in photo uses a mix of wool, mohair, cotton, silk, and synthetics. These yarn amounts are intended as a guide only; you may use more or less depending on your knitting tension and the type of yarn. If in doubt, add an extra ball or skein. Colours: collect together yarns in the same colour palette such as all greens, all blues, all purples, etc. Or use up all the colours in your stash; the more colours the better they go together. Needles: 8mm (Uk0/US11) circular needle
Tension:
11 sts and 20 rows to 10cm (4in) measured over garter stitch and stocking stitch pattern using 8mm (Uk0/US11) needles. Other Materials: beads or buttons to decorate
HOWTOMAKEAMULTIYARN
A Multi Yarn is made up of lengths of different yarns knotted together. The Yarn works best if the yarns are different lengths and there is a good mix of colours, shades, textures, and thicknesses. A ball is made up before beginning toknit the scarf.
1/ Organise your yarns:
Either lay all the yarns out in a colour sequence, distributing textures and dark and light shades so that there aren't large patches of similar textures or shades. Or place all the yarns in a bag so you can pick them out at random.
2/ Make the Yarn:
- Pick up Yarn 1 and pull out a strand of three arms lengths, pick up Yarn 2 and pull out a strand of four arms lengths. Tie them together with a simple overhand knot, leaving ends of approx 5cm (2in) to tie the buttons or beads to. Wind into a ball. - Pick up Yarn 3 and pull out a strand of five arms length. Tie onto the new ball. Carry on in the same way with the other yarns, pulling out three, four or five arms lengths randomly, until all the yarns have been used.
TIPS:
If you placed the yarns in a bag, pull out each yarn one at a time, don't put back into the bag but work through all the yarns before putting them all back into the bag and starting again. Use two strands of very thin yarns like mohair and sock yarn. Make up a grapefruit sized ball of Yarn and then start knitting the scarf. Add more Yarn when or if you need to.

Arms lengths - a quick way to measure: pull the yarn out of the ball, extending your arm; arms length is from your hand to your chin. Overhand knot - a quick and secure knot: lay the two yarn ends together side by side, make a loop with the two yarns and pull the ends through. Pull to tighten.
