Really Simple Placemats
A crochet pattern by Halley Jarrett. This pattern is great for beginners. It's very easy and inexpensive, plus it works up quickly. :)
You'll need:
-sheets of felt, get as many sheets as you'd like to make placemats (there are solid colors available, and also a variety of prints) -worsted weight yarn in a color that coordinates well with the felt colors -any size crochet hook -a hole punch Step 1: Punch a hole near each of the four corners of the first felt sheet, about a half inch from the edges. Punch holes along the four sides of the sheet, evenly spaced approximately half an inch apart. Step 2: In a hole that is not in a corner, single crochet. Make one single crochet in each hole until you reach the end of the side that you are currently working on. After you have made a single crochet in the corner hole, chain 3, then single crochet in the corner hole again, this time on the new side of the felt sheet. Continue in this manner all the way around the sheet, remembering to do (1 sc, ch3, 1 sc) in each corner hole, and just 1 sc in every other hole. Step 3: When the first round is completed and you've gotten back to where you started, slip stich in the first single crochet you made. Next, single crochet in each single crochet until you reach a corner. In corners, do five single crochets in each ch 3 space. Complete the second round in the same way, 1 sc in each sc, 5 sc in each ch 3 space around. Step 4: When round two is complete, slip stitch in the first sc of round two, and fasten off. Repeat with the rest of the felt sheets. Notes: Remember to keep your stitches loose so that the felt won't curl or scrunch up. Felt placemats are spot clean only. For machine washable placemats, fleece can be used. It is slightly more expensive, but washable and available in a wider variety of prints.

Here, I got dark red felt from AC Moore and used it with Red Heart Supersaver in white
