Suzanna Beanie
This pattern was designed in honor of friend Suzanna, who succumbed to cancer in 2014. For any chemo cap, use a yarn that is both soft and washable. To test for softness, rub the yarn on the back of your neck.
Directions
Cast on 72 (84, 96) stitches. Join to begin work in the round, making sure the sts are not twisted. Work one inch of \*k1, p1\* rib. Change to Basket Rib pattern and work until cap is 5.5 (6, 6.5) inches or 14 (15.2, 16.5) cm from cast on edge, unstretched. Next round: \*work in pattern 12 (14, 16) sts, place marker\* repeat between \*s to end of round. Decrease round: \*work in pattern to 2 sts before marker, k2tog\* repeat between \*s to end of round. Work decrease round every OTHER round for one inch (2.5 cm), approximately 6 rounds. (Optional: to keep the decrease line standing out along the top of the hat, on the nondecrease rounds work the previous decrease as a knit stitch.) Then work decrease round EVERY round unti six sts remain. Change to double pointed needles when there are too few sts to fit on circular needle. Cut yarn. Run yarn tail through last six sts and pull tight. Weave in ends.
