Hat Notes
1. Hat also can be worked in the round on 2 circular needles, on 1 circular needle using the Magic Loop method, or knit to the crown shaping on a $16"$ (40.5cm) circular needle. Stitch placement is given for double-pointed needles. 2. Wraps-per-inch (wpi) is a way to measure yarn size. Without stretching, wrap yarn around a ruler for 1" (2.5cm), and count the strands.

INSTRUCTIONS-HAT KNIT IN THE ROUND

HAT KNIT IN ROWS AND SEAMED
Note: It is helpful to leave a long yarn tail at cast on to sew seam. Beginning at bottom, cast on 48 sts. Row 1 (WS): knit. Row 2 (RS): knit. (Mark this side with safety pin for RS of hat.) Work Rows $\textnormal{1829}$ times total; then work Row 1. There will be 10 garter stitch ridges on RS, and hat will measure approximately $_{2"}$ (5cm).
Crown Shaping

(36 sts) Row 5: $\ast_{\mathsf{k4}}$ , k2tog\* across (30 sts) Row 7: $\ast\mathsf{k}3$ , k2tog\* across. (24 sts) Rows 8, 9 & 10: knit. Row 11: $\ast_{\mathsf{k}2}$ , k2tog\* across. Break yarn, leaving an $8"$ (20cm) strand. Thread through remaining stitches twice, pull tightly, and secure.
Sew back seam—see photo and description on right. Weave in yarn ends.

To seam garter stitch, fold hat with RS out (side with the safety pin marker). Use yarn tail to whip stitch together garter stitch bumps next to edge on each side as shown above. Yarn tails can be used for seaming, and contrasting colored yarn only was used on sample to show how seam is sewn.
