
Colourful Flower Hanging
by Janet McMahon Here's a jolly crochet hanging that will add a splash of colour to your walls. It comprises three flowers each with a 3 dimensional centre, six leaves and a weighted droplet to match the colours of the petals of the flowers.

To make a Colourful Flower Hanging, you will need: double knitting yarn in the following colours - Three shades of yellow, blue, purple, and pink - dark, medium and light Two shades of green - dark and light 3mm crochet hook (American size C/D) 4 mm crochet hook (American size G) A small amount of toy stuffing Finished length - approximately 76 cm / 30 inches
PATTERN
(UK crochet terms used) dc (UK) = sc (American) htr (UK) = hdc (American) tr (UK) = dc (American)
FLOWER
With dark yellow and 3 mm hook make 2 chain. 1st round: 6 dc (Us = sc) into 2nd chain from hook. Join with a slip st into 1st dc. 2nd round: 1 ch, 2 dc into same stitch as chain, [2 dc into next dc] 5 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (12 dc) Break off dark yellow and join in medium yellow. 3rd round: 1 ch, 2 dc into same stitch as chain, 1 dc into next dc, [2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into next dc] 5 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (18 dc) 4th round: 1 ch, 2 dc into same stitch as chain, 1 dc into next 2 dc, [2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into next 2 dc] 5 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (24 dc) Break off medium yellow and join in light yellow. 5th round: 1 ch, 2 dc into same stitch as chain, 1 dc into next 3 dc, [2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into next 3 dc] 5 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (30 dc) 6th round: 1 ch, 2 dc into same stitch as chain, 1 dc into next 4 dc, [2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into next 4 dc] 5 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (36 dc) Fasten off. Make another flower centre in the same way.

Place the two centres together with the right side outer most.

7th Round: Join in light blue and working in the back loops only and through both pieces of work, 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. Stuff the flower centre before completing the round.

8th round: 3 ch (counts as 1 tr), 1 tr in same place, 1 tr in next 3 dc, [2 tr in next dc, 1 tr in next 3 dc] x 11, slip st into 1st tr. (45 tr) Break off light blue and join in medium blue. 9th round: 3 ch (counts as 1 tr), 2 tr in next tr, 1 tr in next tr, 4 ch, [1 tr in next tr, 2 tr in next tr, 1 tr in next tr, 4 ch] x 14, slip st into 1st tr. (60 tr) Break off medium blue and join in dark blue between any 2 tr group.

10th round: [Miss 2 tr, 8tr into 4 ch space, miss 2 tr, sl st between 2 tr group] to end. Fasten off and neaten all loose ends.

Repeat the process substituting the purple and pink shades for the blue to make three flowers in total.

LEAVES
With light green and 3 mm hook, chain 9. Round 1: 1 dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc into next ch, 1 htr into next ch, 1 tr into each of next 3 ch, 1 htr into next ch, 1 dc into next ch, working back along the other side of the chain, 2 dc into 1st chain, 1 htr into next ch, 1 tr into next 3 ch, 1 htr into next ch, 1 dc into next 2 ch, slip st into 1st dc. Break off light green and join in dark green. Round 2: sl st into next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr into next st, 2 tr in next 3 sts, 1 tr and 1 htr into next st, 1 htr into next 2 sts, 1 htr and 1 tr into next st, 2 tr into next 3 sts, 1 htr into next st, 1 dc into next st, slip st into next 2 sts, slip st into 1st st and fasten off. Neaten all loose ends. Repeat the process two more times and then make three more leaves reversing the shades of green to make a total of six leaves.

DROPLETANDMAKINGUP
With dark blue and 3 mm hook make 2 ch. 1st round: 6 dc (US = sc) into 2nd chain from hook. Join with a slip st into 1st dc. 2nd round: 1 ch, 2 dc into same stitch as chain, [2 dc into next dc] 5 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (12 dc) Break off dark blue and join in medium blue. 3rd round: 1 ch, 2 dc into same stitch as chain, 1 dc into next dc, [2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into next dc] 5 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (18 dc) 4th round: 1 ch, 2 dc into same stitch as chain, 1 dc into next 2 dc, [2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into next 2 dc] 5 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (24 dc) Break off medium blue and join in dark purple. 5th and 6th rounds: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. Break off dark purple and join in medium purple. round: 1 ch, [dc2tog, 1 dc into next 2 dc] 6 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (18 d 8th round: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. Break off medium purple and join in dark pink. 9th round: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. 10th round: 1 ch, [dc2tog, 1 dc into next 1 dc] 6 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (12 dc) Break off dark pink and join in medium pink. 11th round: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. Stuff droplet at this point (l added a little pebble to give it extra weight so that it would hang well). 12th round: 1 ch, [dc2tog,] 6 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (6 dc) Break off medium pink and join in dark green. 13th round: 1 ch, [dc2tog,] 3 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (3 dc) Without breaking off dark green, join in light green and change to 4 mm hook. Using the two strands of yarn together, chain 4.

Hold a pair of leaves with wrong sides together and work 3 dc through both leaves at the base.

Chain 10, slip st into the outer edge of the back of the blue flower and fasten off.

Rejoin the two strands of yarn to a point opposite the previous join on the back of the flower centre. Chain 10 and join a pair of leaves as before. Chain 10 and attach to purple flower as before. Rejoin yarn and chain 10 and join in last pair of leaves. Chain 10 and attach to pink flower as before. Rejoin yarn and chain 30. slip st into 16 ch from hook to form a hanging loop. Slip st into 3 more ch and fasten off.

Neaten all loose ends. And there it is, your own Colourful Flower Hanging ready to bring a splash of jolliness to your home.
