Pattern
MOTIF A: With 3.5 mm hook and any shade of grey, start at the centre - 3 ch, sl st to make a circle. Into the circle, make 3 ch (as first tr), 1 ch, then make 2 ch-1 tr into the circle 11 more times. [12 tr and 2 ch spaces] Round 2: 3 ch (as first tr), then 3 ch-1tr into the next tr of previous round, \*3 ch-1 tr into next tr\*, repeat to the end, sl st into 2nd chain at the beginning of round. [12 loops] Round 3: \*1 dc-1 htr-3 tr 1 htr-1 dc\* into first loop, repeat in all loops, sl st into 1 dc at beginning of round. [12 shells] Round 4: Sl st into 1dc, 1 htr, next tr and the centre tr of shell, \*5 ch, 1 dc into the centre tr of next shell\*, repeat all around. [12 5 ch loops] Round 5: \*3 dc into first 5 ch loop-3 ch (picot)-3 dc into same loop. Repeat into next 5 ch loop. Working the corner loop: 3 dc into next 5 ch loop-7 ch-3 dc into same loop (corner loop of motif A)\* Repeat between \*\* 3 more times to make a square motif. Cut off yarn and weave into work neat! Work MOTIF B as you would for Motif A, with same shade as A, work until Round 4. With Motif A and Motif B back to back, work 3 dc into first loop, then 1 dc picking up into picot of Motif A, then back to Motif B, 1 ch, 3 dc. Repeat once more with next picot. Next step: Into corner loop, (3 dc-3 ch-work 1 dc picking up into centre of 7 ch loop of motif A - 3 ch-3 dc back into corner loop of Motif B. Repeat this process with every two motifs in different shades of grey, alternating to create a pattern with all 3 shades of grey. Note that when you are joining the third and the fourth motifs at the centre, where the motifs meet, it will look like a 4 leaf clover. The best of Irish luck to you! When you feel you have a long enough scarf (our scarf has 32 motifs), start making corkscrew fringes: Working with the same shade of grey as the last motif worked, pick up at centre of one corner loop, make a chain of 10 or more. Skip the first 2 ch, into the next ch make up to 7 or more tr, as many as you can fit, as it twists and curls. Repeat with several tr into each ch until you reach back to the edge of the motif. Continue with a row of dc into each of the 3 dc of the motif's edge, then into the first picot make another 10 or more chains, into which you will work a twisted, curly corkscrew as the previous one. Continue until you have 7 or so corkscrews to the other end of the scarf's motif. Repeat the same process with whichever shade of grey you worked the other edge of the scal If desired, block scarf when done.
