The Chevalier Shawl: A Detailed Guide to Creating a Lacy Shawl with an Elegant Chevalier Edging

A lacy shawl, in any size, based on the Chevalier Collar, by Marianne Kinzel. The Chevalier edging is not my original design, but the charts are my own work, translated from the written instructions.

Instructiong

Cast on 3 stitches using the crochet cast on and waste yarn. With the working yarn, knit 15 rows. Do not turn work. Pm, pick up 3 stitches along the side, pm, pick up 1 stitch, pm, then pick up 3 stitches to the end. Carefully pull out the temporary cast on, and put the 3 stitches on your free needle. Pm, knit those 3 stitches to the end. You will have 13 stitches on the needle. Row 1 (ws): k3, sm, m1l, k to m, sm, k1, sm, k to m, mlr, sm, k3. Rows 2 and 3: repeat Row 1. Row 4 (rs): k3, sm, m1l, k to m, mlr, sm, k1, sm, m1l, k to m, m1r, sm, k3. Repeat rows 1-4 as desired, ending on row 3. Your stitch count should equal a multiple of ten, plus three, plus six selvedge stitches. Begin to work the Chevalier Edging chart, continuing to knit the three selvedge stitches on each edge (they are not shown on the chart). There are two options for the bind-off: you can simply finish it with a Russian bind-off as I did, or you can work Marianne Kinzel's original bind-off: After knitting last row of purl, turn the work, and then start to finish the outer edge with a chain of crochet. 3 or 4 sts are crocheted together with 1 sc, and a number of chain are made to link these groups, as follows: 4 sts, 1 sc, 10 ch, \*(3 sts, 1 sc, 10 ch) 7 times, 3 sts, 1 sc, 3 ch, 3 sts, 1 sc, 10 ch, \* rep 13 (or over however many repeats you have) times from \* to \*, ending (3 sts, 1 sc, 10 ch) 7 times, 4 sts, 1 sc.
