Scarf-A-Licious Wrap Pattern by Lynne Lounsbury - Detailed Instructions for Crescent-Shaped Shawl

Scarf-A-Licious Wrap Pattern

Designed by Lynne Lounsbury. @2012 Patternworks. This crescent-shaped shawl begins with the narrow edging, worked side to side. Stitches are then picked up along the straight side of the edging and worked up toward the top. Purple model shown is size 39" using Sock-A-Licious in the Majesty colorway. Blue/grey model shown is size 45" using Sock-A-Licious in the Celestial colorway for the edging; the body of the shawl is knit in two-row stripes of the Celestial and Moonstruck colorways. Sizes: Approx. 39(42,45,48,51,54,57)" along top edge after blocking Gauge: 4.5 sts x 11 rows = 1" in garter stitch Yarn: Kollage Sock-A-Licious, 1(2,2,2,3,3,3) skeins; 0r approx. 350(440,530,620,710,800,900) yards fingeringweight yarn for a single-color shawl. (For a striped shawl, one skein each of 2 colors will be enough for the two smallest sizes. For the 45" through 57" sizes, you'll need 2 skeins of the color used for the edging in order to have enough left to stripe the body. One skein of the second color is enough for all sizes. Each point of edging uses approximately 4.5 yards of yarn. For a size 45" shawlette, you'll use a little more than 2/3 of a skein of Sock-A-Licious for the edging alone.) Needles: 24" or longer circular in U.S. size 5 (3.75mm); and same size in straight or double-pointed needles for edging, if desired Abbreviations: K = knit; pm = place marker; RS = right side; sl = slip (purlwise unless noted); ssk = slip 2 sts individually knitwise, insert left needle from left to right through front of both sts and knit them tog through back loops; st(s) = stitch(es); tog = together; tbl = through back loop; WS = wrong side; wyif = with yarn in front; yb = yarn back; yo = yarn over Pattern is written for the smallest size (39"). Chart on following page shows changes to pattern for other sizes.

For sizes 42" through 57", please note:

· When working the Edging, you will work Rows 1 through 10 one fewer time than the number of edging points listed above in column B, then work Rows 1 through 9 once more to complete the last edging point. · When you finish the Edging and it's time to pick up and purl along the edge, you will pick up and purl the number of sts shown in column C above. · When working Row 1 of the Body of Shawl, the number of sts shown in column D above is what you will knit after the ssks and before the k2togs. The number in column E is the number of times you will work the stitches shown in brackets. For example, if you make a size 48" shawl with 60 edging points, you will work Row 1 as: Sl 1 wyif, yb, [pm, ssk, k28] 5x, [pm different from others to mark center, k28,k2tog] 5x, pm, k1tbl. · When working Rows 1 and 5 of the Body of Shawl, the number of sts decreased will be 10 for sizes 45" and 48", and 12 for sizes 51" and up, since there are more decrease sections across the row.

INSTRUCTIONS

Edging:

Note: As you work the first 9 rows of the edging pattern, you will increase 1 stitch every other row so that after finishing row 9 you will have 11 total stitches; in row 10, you decrease 5 of those stitches to return to the original number of 6 stitches. Cast on 6 sts using straight needles. Row 1 (RS): K2, yo, k2tog, yo, k2 Rows 2, 4,6 and 8: Knit across Row 3: K3, yo, k2tog, yo, k2 Row 5: K4, yo, k2tog, yo, k2 Row 7: K5, yo, k2tog, yo, k2 Row 9: K6, yo, k2tog, yo, k2 Row 10: Bind off first 5 sts, k to end (6 sts on needle) Repeat Rows 1-10 43 times more, then work Rows 1-9 once (total of 45 points along edge). Next row (Ws): Bind off to the last st; do not cut yarn (you should have one st remaining on the needle) Place last remaining stitch from edging on long circular needle. Continuing with the same working yarn, pick up and purl 225 sts along the straight side of the edging. (You are picking up stitches with the wrong/back side of the edging facing you.) Including the one st remaining from the edging, you should now have 226 sts total. Turn.

Next row (Rs): K across to last st, k1tbl Next row (Ws): Sl1 wyif, yb, k across to last st, kltbl Body of Shawl: Note: It's not necessary to place a different-looking marker to indicate the center but its helpfulforkeeping track of where you are in the row. Row 1 (RS): Sl1 wyif, yb, [pm, ssk, k26] 4x, [pm different from others to mark center,k26, k2tog] 4x, pm, k1tbl (8 sts decreased) Row 2 (WS): Sl1 wyif, yb, k across to last stitch, k1tbl (slip all markers as you work across) Note: Check the number of sts you have between markers. As you work across Row 3, maintain the correct number of sts between the markers. You may need to move some markers in order to work the k2togs and maintain the correct stitch counts. There will be fewer stitches in the outermost sections between the first two and last two markers, since you will be decreasing I st in those outermost sections. Row 3: Sl1 wyif, yb, sk, [k2tog, yo] to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1ltbl (2 sts decreased) Row 4: Sl1 wyif, yb, k across to last stitch, kltbl Row 5: Sl1 wyif, yb, [ssk, k to marker] 4x, [k to 2 sts before marker, k2tog] 4x, k1tbl (8 sts decreased) Row 6: Sl1 wyif, yb, k across to last stitch, kltbl Row 7: Sl1 wyif, yb, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1tbl (2 sts decreased) Row 8: Sl1 wyif, yb, k across to last stitch, k1tbl Rows 9-16: Repeat Rows 5-8 two more times Rows 17-18: Repeat Rows 5-6 once more (Again, check the number of sts between markers before starting Row 19 and adjust marker placement as you work across to maintain those stitch counts.) Row 19: Sl1 wyif, yb, ssk, [yo, k2tog] to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1tbl (2 sts decreased) Row 20: Sl1 wyif, yb, k across to last stitch, kltbl Rows 21-34: Repeat Rows 5-18 Repeat Rows 3 through 34 to desired depth or until top edge forms a smooth curve; bind off loosely in pattern on a RS row. Note: As you continue to work decreases just inside the selvage sts on every right-side row, you will decrease sts faster in the outermost section on each edge. Remove first and last markers when you have decreased away all the sts in the outermost section on each edge, moving the second and second-last markers to a position one st in from each edge (if not already there) as a reminder to decrease immediately after the first selvage st and just before the last selvage st on rig ht-siderows.Also, as you decrease away an entire section on each edge of the shawl, the number of times you repeat the stitches in brackets will decrease as well because you now have fewer sections on each side of the center. This is where having a different-looking marker at the center helpson the rows where you are decreasing in each section, you'll work [ssk, k to marker] until you reach the center marker, then you will switch to [k to 2 sts before marker, k2togl after you've slipped the center marker. Happy Knitting!
