garter stripe scarf
This is a very simple unisex scarf. It is knit lengthwise in a combination of sections of garter stitch alternated with sections of stockinette stitch in a random sequence. This particular yarn combination creates a cloud-like fabric that is absolutely heavenly. Yarn: 1-2 skeins Malabrigo Lace, 1-2 skeins Rowan Fine Lace Size: approximately 9" wide by 60" (72") long Gauge: 6 sts per inch in stockinette Needles: US 6 24” circular, or size needed to obtain gauge Directions: Holding one strand of Malabrigo together with one strand of Rowan, cast on 360 (420) sts, being very careful to leave a generous full stitch width (1/4 inch) between each stitch so that the cast on edge is not too tight. Row 1, 3, 5 (ws): Knit Row 2 and ALL RIGHT SIDE Rows: Knit Row 7, 9, 11 (ws): K5, Purl to last 5, K5 Row 13, 15, 17,19,21,23,25,27,29: Knit Row 31, 33: K5, Purl to last 5, K5 Row 35: Knit Row 37, 39, 41, 43, 45: K5, Purl to last 5, K5 Row 47, 49, 51: Knit Row 53: K5, Purl to last 5, K5 Row 55, 57, 59, 61, 63: Knit Row 65, 67, 69: K5, Purl to last 5, K5 Row 71, 73: Knit Row 75, 77, 79, 81, 83: K5, Purl to last 5, K5 Row 85, 87, 89, 91: Knit Bind off stitches using the K2tog bind off: Knit 2 stitches onto right needle, insert left needle tip into front of two stitches and knit them together. Weave in ends and block carefully, trying not to overly stretch scarf lengthwise. Tips: As you cast on place a marker every 50 stitches so that if you lose count you only have to go back to the last marker to recount. There is no pattern repeat for this scarf, so any number of stitches will do, making this very easy to add or subtract stitches to make it desired length. I knit this scarf completely random, deciding as i went how wide to make each “stripe". You can easily end the pattern earlier on a garter stitch section or keep going past the written pattern to change the Width.
