ANIVA @ ArbelDekel 2010
A simple, chic, one-skein cravat, easily modified to suit yourtaste: personalize the length, width, or stitch choice. Aniva is a drapey scarf that should not require blocking.

Pictured: 2 variations on the basic pattern Needles: size us 7 and 8 Gauge: your choice, not crucial Yarn: 100 yards of Patons Silk Bamboo (Yardage reflects given versions. Size modifications may change the amount needed) Other tools: size d / 3.25 mm (or close size) pointy-ended crochet hook for picking up stitches k: knit sl1: slip 1 stitch ws: wrong side p: purl ssk: sl,sl,k, or sl1, k1, psso wyib: with yarn in back R: row/round st: stitch wyif: with yarn in front rs: right side St st: stockinette stitch Yo: yarn over \*\*Note: if you run into a break in the yarn mid-skein, simply work 3 or 4 sts with yarn doubled, leaving enough length on both tails to work your way up to the last section, where all ends will be woven in and hidden.
Version one, with eyelets and St. st loop
1. Ruffle: With larger needles, very loosely cast on 41 st, leaving a 35" tail. Work 3-row eyelet section: R1: (ws) k across. (p ridge created on rs). R2 (rs): k2, then [(yo,ssk) 19 times], end k1. R3: (ws): k across. (2nd p ridge created). Continue ruffle as follows: R4: (rs) sl1 wyib, k across. R5: (ws) sl1 wyif, p across. -repeat rows 4 and 5 till ruffle section is 4 1/2 " from cast-on edge. End by working a wsr. 2. Next R (rs): k1, ssk 20 times, (20 sts decreased, 21 sts on needles) 3. Next row (ws): bind off all sts rather tightly, but DO NOT BREAK YARN!!! (this step stabilizes the transition R to keep it from stretching). 4. You now have one st on needle. Using crochet hook, and working into the top part of each bound off stitch, pick up 20 sts. (you now have 21 sts on needle). needle. t section as follows: next R (ws) K across. Next R: K2, (yo,ssk) 9 times, k1. Next R R: (rs) K across. 6.When main section measures 19" long, work a ws R, then work a decrease R as follows: (k2, ssk)5 times, end k1 (16 sts on needle). 8. Bind off sts tightly to stabilize, but DO NOT BREAK YARN!!! 9. You have one st on needle. Using crochet hook, pick up the 15 bound-off sts for a total of 16 sts. 10. Loop section: continuing with smaller needles, work in St st as follows: on rs, sl1 wyib, k across. On ws, sl1 wyif, p across. Work till section is 6" long. Bind off, break yarn, leaving a 15" tail. Do not yet sew loop.
FINISHING:
a.Weave the 35" cast-on tail up length of scarf (as invisibly and stretchily as possible). Weave it in on the ws of the loop section and trim. b. Form loop by folding loop section in half, ws together (see "fold line" in schematic diagram). Using the 15" bind-off tail, sew bound-off edge to the stabilized area made in step 8. Hide tail by working it inside the loop. Weave in end, trim.
Version two. Plain, with garter stitch loop
1. cast on 41 st, leaving a 35" tail. Work ruffle section as follows: R1: Sl1 wyib, k across. R 2,3,4: repeat R1. R5 (rs): Sl1 wyib, k across. R6 (ws): sl1 wyif, p across. Repeat rows 5 and 6 still ruffle section is 4 1/2 " from cast-on edge. End by working a ws R. 2. Decrease R (rs): k1, ssk 20 times, (you now have 21 sts on needles) 3. Next row (ws): tightly bind off all sts purlwise, but DO NOT BREAK YARN!!! (this step stabilizes the transition R to keep it from stretching). 4. You now have one st on needle. Using crochet hook, and working into the top part of each bound off stitch, pick up 20 sts. (you now have 21 sts on needle). 5. Work main section in 1x1 rib stitch as follows: on rs, sl1 wyif, then [(k1, p1)10 times]. On ws, sl1 wyib, then [(p1,k1)10 times]. 6.When main section measures 19" long, work a ws R, then work a decrease R as follows: (k2, ssk)5 times, end k1 (16 sts on needle). 7. Tightly bind off sts purlwise to stabilize, but DO NOT BREAK YARN!!! 8. Loop section, in garter st: next R (rs): K across. 9. Next R : sl1 wyif, k across. Repeat tillop section measures 6" long. Bind off, leaving a 15" tail. Do not yetsewloop. FINISHING: same as for version one. Variations: use any st pattern on any section, checking that the st count works w/chosen st. I do not recommend eyelets/lace on last (loop) section, as all yarn ends are to be hidden inside it.
