The back and front of this house are knitted in garter stitch. The door, windows and roof are added afterwards. You will need 4 ply yarn in brown, cream, red and yellow and 2.75mm / US size 2 needles.

The House

Using brown yarn cast on 15 sts. Knit 24 rows. Next row: SSK, K to last 2 sts, K2tog. Next row: Knit. Repeat these two rows until you have 3 sts left. Cast off with a double decrease: sl 1 kwise, K2tog, psso. Make two pieces the same, one for the front and one for the back.

The Snow

Using cream yarn pick up and knit 9 sts along one side of the roof on the front of the house. Beginning with a purl row, work 3 rows in stocking stitch. Cast off using the picot point cast off: \*Cast on 2 sts, cast off those 2 sts, cast off 2 more sts then transfer the stitch on the right hand needle to the left and repeat from \*. Roll this knitted edging to the right side and sew down through the holes created by the cast off. Work the second side of the roof to match and then join the snow at the top centre.

The Door

Using red yarn cast on 5 sts. Work 6 rows in stocking stitch and cast off. Sew the door to the front of the house and add a tiny black bead for the door handle.

The Windows

Using yellow yarn cast on 4 sts. Work 3 rows in stocking stitch and cast off purlwise. Make two windows and sew them to the front of the house. Sew two crosses over them in brown yarn for window frames. Sew the back of the house to the front . Using a 2.5mm crochet hook make 15 chain and form into a hanging loop. Sew this to the top of the house. ① Frankie Brown, 2011.
